The conventional wisdom espoused by the GOP establishment and pundits like Karl Rove was the idea that Tea Party supported candidates, that won GOP primaries, would be the big losers on election night in this year's mid-term elections. But a reasonable analysis of the elections results tells us that moderate GOP nominees were the big losers. Even the ones backed by the Koch brothers. The most moderate GOP candidates were nominated in some of the more blue states and they lost badly in races that could have been won against vulnerable Democrat incumbents who voted for Obamacare.
In Oregon the GOP nominated a doctor named Monica Wehby. One would think, that's great, they nominated a doctor who could beat liberal Democrat who voted for Obamacare. But Wehby was a poor candidate, had some minor baggage, and while she was strong enough to defeat a Tea Party backed and more conservative candidate in the primary, she was an easy candidate for incumbent Senator Jeff Merkely to defeat. Wehby was moderate, pro-choice on abortion and a weak candidate. Despite being backed by the Koch brothers, she lost the Oregon senate race by 18.5 percent.
In Minnesota, Al Franken, who was also the deciding vote in passing Obamacare, was vulnerable. The GOP nominated a moderate mister nice guy who was sure to lose to Franken. Mike McFadden was much like Mitt Romney, a nice guy who couldn't dare say anything negative about the opponent. This proved to be an easy way for Al Franken to get a second term in the senate. The moderate, mister nice guy approach by McFadden was an epic failure on election day. Al Franken won reelection by more than 10 percent on election day.

Otherwise, this sentence will probably send chills up the Establishment's spine: "The message on election night was clear, the moderate, Democrat Lite, brand of Republicanism supported by the establishment did not win the Senate majority for the GOP."
Tea Party won in Mississippi until John Cornyn, Karl Rove and Haley Barbour paid black democrats to vote in the run off. 6000 illegal voters showed up getting $15 a piece all on money donated by you to the party to elect Thad Cock Ran, the dinasour establishment boy.
Then there’s Scott Brown in NH, the proven sellout in the US Senate. Four years ago, Kelly Ayotte won a Senate seat in NH pretending to be a conservative.
The article does not mention them, but RINO Scott Brown and GOPe Ed Gillespie were also losers.
Those two candidates that are described as moderate Republicans were really libertarian Republicans. The Paulers just didn’t have the power that they thought they had. It goes to show that attempting to be all things to all people doesn’t work.
The GOP would do well to run only candidates in that category.
So help me, the Republic would be served by anyone who pushed Karl Rove off a cliff.
But then who would Hannity regularly fawn over and provide a bullhorn to bash conservatives?
Gillespie damn near won, and he had zero party support.
The examples he cites, OR, MN and NJ are three of the most liberal states. He could add Kashkari in the CA governors race. But really there’s no reason to think they lost because they are moderates, or that a conservative candidate would do better.
IF moderates were the loser, why then are they still calling the shots? Why have they not been or being replaced by conservatives?
i could almost cry when i think of what could have been had we conservatives not been willfully suppressed in the national primaries by mcconnell, boehner and their GOPe/chamber cronies. still, our Lord is in charge of these results, not the leftist GOP, and His will be done. these “split” results are hopeful, especially at the local and state levels, are clearly mandated by Him for our own good.
Wait! You mean the Koch Brothers backed losers? They can lose? For all their money and influence, they couldn’t buy their elections? How is that possible???????
So of course, the lesson to learn is: RUN MORE “MODERATES”!!!
“Moderate is a base-stealing word for liberal Republicans.” — William F. Buckley Jr.
So much for the meme that the GOP needs to "move left on social issues to remain competitive."
Exactly, because Democrat beats Democratic-Lite every single time. Why vote for the half-measure when you can vote for the real thing.
Because there's a difference between successfully getting elected and successfully climbing the ladder in an intra-party hierarchy.
The one requires appealing to the voters, the other requires appealing to other like-minded politicrats who already inhabit higher levels in the hierarchy.
