Bar owner: Video supports Texas City police account of shooting

| Updated: 3:22 am, Sat Dec 27, 2014. By T.J. AULDS, CHRISTOPHER SMITH GONZALEZ & SHANNON DAUGHTRY

TEXAS CITY — Accounts differ about how Carlton Wayne “Chimmy” Smith, 20, came to be holding a handgun when police responding to a call about a crowd arrived at a notorious nightclub early Friday morning.

Police said Smith had been firing into the crowd leaving H.T.’s Lounge, 6204 FM 1765, as a Christmas bash was ending about 1:30 a.m.

Some friends and relatives said Smith had taken the gun away from another person, who had been shooting into the air, and was holding it with no ill intent.

But police and witnesses agree Smith was holding the gun when the officers arrived.

The club’s owner had called police because people were slow to leave and were lingering in the parking lot, Capt. Joe Stanton said.

Three officers arrived to find 100 or more people and a disturbance, Stanton said. Soon, they heard gunshots, Stanton said.

A six-year veteran patrol officer confronted Smith and warned him to drop the gun, police officials said.

He turned, pointing the pistol at the officer, who fired, killing Smith, police said. Officials have not said how many shots the officer fired.

The shooting led some people in the crowd to throw rocks and other objects at the police.

:’) And they, and FR’s cop-haters, can argue with the video.

LA MARQUE – Friday night at Martin Luther King Park in La Marque, dozens stood around in silence.

Candles flickered as they gathered to remember their friend, 20-year-old Carlton Smith who was fatally shot by a Texas City police officer in the parking lot of H.T.'s Lounge early Friday morning.

"Carlton was a good kid, I remember him from high school," said Jazmine Huntin.

“This brother was assassinated,” claimed King Yashua, minister of defense and co-founder of the Nation of Liberation. “It’s just like Ferguson.” Cook said he saw no similarities with the Ferguson shooting and similar cases. “The evidence we’ve seen will speak for itself,” he said.”

A quick search found a video of the peaceful King Yashua giving a few words of his wisdom to his followers.....

Good boy or not, you DON’T point a gun at anything you aren’t prepared to shoot. No one, police officer or otherwise, is obligated to wait and see what your intentions are.

I’m reminded of the Law & Order episode “Sanctuary”.

Nasty movie but a great line. That show was disturbing to say the least. Some great acting though!

You know.... in the movies... on television... in all of the cop shows and the NCIS stuff.... bad guys point a gun at the cops and the cops talk him into putting it down. These shows need to run a disclaimer on the bottom of the screen that says “in real life, if you point a gun at a cop he probably just unloads his gun into you, no questions asked.”

Too much TV. These ghetto thugs think if they have some Air Jordans on, or they shout along to some hideous rap lyrics on head phones, or have some weed on them, they are gonna be Jay Z.

Not in Texas. We have sane gun laws.

In the interest of black lives do matter:

I wonder if he had a permit to carry a gun and who is the registered owner of the gun? I wonder if he even knew how to use one properly. Sounds like he skipped the course on gun safety.

I think he made a bad decision not to run. Guns and alcohol will get one killed, especially in a bar parking lot after midnight, especially in Texas. My mama taught me ... papa too.

Probably a petty argument not worth putting his life on the line. The people he was arguing with are still around somewhere to fight and argue another day until their number comes up. He is but a memory (aborted very late in his term). Yea, gone to that big choir in the sky.

So sad to just be getting ones life together and have this happen to such a good boy. He might have been president one day. Now Texas will never know the difference his life would have made. Perhaps he would have followed in the footsteps of our beloved Lyndon Johnson.

Just a reminder, in our Texas culture (and some surrounding states) people will shoot back and kill your a$$. We’re not as cultured and civilized as some liberal states. We’re not joking, we haven’t time to check your pedigree, social standing, or with your mama. So in Texas we try to stay “friendly”. When that fails, we do unto others as they would do unto us (hopefully not too late).

A lot of martial artists have spent a lot of time to come up with ways to take a gun away from someone else. Just do a quick YouTube search for “how to disarm someone with a gun”.

It works better than you might think, because a lot of criminal gunmen do not know how to use a gun properly and otherwise have the IQ of mildew. And even people who know how to use guns properly make errors that can be exploited.

Based on relatives’ and friends’ comments, his name should have been Carlton Wayne “Dindu Nuffins” Smith.

Bet it was a strip club. All the NFL, NBA players show up there. That is where all the players get into trouble. At Da Strip Club.

Don’t try it on me. Won’t let Kung Fu or one of the bruthas get that close before they’ll have to start catching lead.

Why don’t black just follow the damn instructions of cops? Seems like suicide by cop.

Sadly that doesn’t work. Check out the Tueller drill. It is designed for a police officer who is prepared to be attacked, and still needs 21 feet minimum for a double tap.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tueller_Drill

And as a civilian, not expecting a charge, you would likely need 30 feet or more. But wait, there’s more.

The majority of the time you cannot tell ill intent. Most attacks use subterfuge to “close the gap”, but you cannot tell if it is subterfuge or someone with a legitimate reason to approach, which it is most of the time.

This is why I often insist that if you are going to carry a gun, you also carry a knife as a complementary weapon, in that it fills possible tactical gaps you have with a gun.

You do not wish to be casually brandishing your gun in public, but you can brandish a knife very discreetly. If they rush you within the Tueller distance, they lose. If they do not close quickly enough, you get your gun and they lose.

Now, after all that, turn the situation around. They have a gun pointed at you, and you are within *their* Tueller distance. They do not know that you have a cc gun or a knife.

In one instance, you just parry their gun so it is not aimed at you, and use your knife. Or gun, for that matter. If you can close to under five feet, you might be able to pull off some disarming self defense. You have some big advantages over them.

This especially applies if they are using their gun like a nitwit. They likely believe that a gun magically imparts control and dominance over others.
