Nearly two of every three families making an interstate move involving New Jersey last year were leaving the Garden State, the highest rate in the country.
New Jersey had the greatest percentage of outbound moves of any state nationally last year with almost 65 percent departing,

Well, if you live in the western part of New Jersey, it’s a very nice place to live. It’s not congested and taxes are somewhat lower.
Yes, it’s an expensive place to live, but right now my wife and I can manage it. We’re lucky we have good jobs.
That being said, there’s certainly no way we plan to retire here. It just won’t be possible even without a mortgage. So we’ll hopefully have a cold weather in the South for the winter months and likely spend summer months out of the country altogether.
Like Camden?
Or perhaps you mean something more specific...
New Jersey DOES have an exit tax. Its on the books and is enforced.
Has anyone ever challenged the constitutionality of “exit taxes” under Article I Section 9?
Well, it may be cheaper to leave now rather than later.
“And arent you heavily taxed when you leave? Wow, thats bad....”
It ain’t pretty.
NC rules.
Do they gain any effective revenue from it, or just a bunch of state judgements that are never collected?
(I realize that would probably be enough to keep a batallion of state attorneys and accountants employed, which would justify it in the eyes of the state govt.)
I highly doubt California is balanced. We’ve got so many Kali license plates here one would think they were in Kali.
We will move to TX within 3-5 years.
“Statewide average property taxes in close to $8,000 !!”
Exactly why my wife’s friends are moving out of New Jersey. Their property tax is now $13,000 at year. Just insane.
From 2000 to 2012 My town lost 7.8% of it's population and almost all of them were folks moving out of state.
It’s the TAX difference.
I don’t think they have taken the illegals into consideration.
Camden is South. Way south.
Very surprised..Calif. wasn’t HIGH out bound.
The virus of liberalism is spreading!
Not exactly.
There is a 2% tax under certain circumstances. You have to live in NJ 2 out of the past 5 years and you need to have filed your tax return for the previous year in NJ. If that’s the case, you’re exempt.
Otherwise, there is a state tax that will be incurred if you move out of state. If you currently reside in NJ as your primary residence, then there is no additional “exit” fee.
I guess outsider’s descriptions are different than those that live there. Camden is as “West” as Belvidere when using the map.
