Fiscal Policy: In this time of political partisanship, the two parties at last have found something they can agree on: raising the gas tax. It's a truly awful idea, and might get Republicans kicked out of office.
It's shocking that Republicans, who won the last election by promising limited government and lower taxes, would in their first week back in power make noises about joining tax-and-spend liberal Democrats to raise the 18-cents-a-gallon gas tax. But that's exactly what they're doing.
Suddenly, a number of Republicans who should all know better are saying they'll "consider" a gasoline tax hike, especially if paired with something they want badly. A hike in the gas tax, they say, could "finance" other things like a big-spending transportation bill, or even corporate tax cuts.
A headline in The Hill captures it perfectly: "Momentum builds in Congress for raising the federal gas tax."
Well, if the GOP is serious about being a party of limited government and low taxes, it shouldn't raise gasoline taxes; it should cut spending. And don't tell voters you can't cut.

Post of the thread.
Gas tax is per gallon and when the price goes down more gallons are sold.
As usual NOTHING changes.
All hat and no cattle!
How does one finance a tax cut? Never made much sense to me.
BY eliminating the gov’t program the tax is a tax FOR..
Thereby eliminating the agency AND the tax..
The US Constitution was created specifically to LIMIT federal government..
WHY?... the entire Constitution has been ELIMINATED...
Some say it’s still there.. BUT they be WRONG... it’s abrogated.. useless.. a figurehead ONLY..
I’ll be very interested to see what Trey Gowdy and liberal Mia Love think of this.
Uniparty Rules!
Big problem here in Texas. A quarter of gas tax goes to “education”, loosely defined, etc. Ends up only a bit over a quarter goes to actually putting pavement on roads.
Bike paths and hiking trails ought to come out of general funds, unlikely we can find a way to directly tax such users. IF and a big IF we can see our way to using all gas tax for the roads on which gas powered vehicles move, I can see an increase. We are at least 20 years behind on maintanence.
Otherwise they would've preferred to run as a big government democrat.
There’s a party of limited government? Where do I sign up?
NO NEW TAXES, PERIOD!
We must improve our infrastructure and the trillions spent earlier found their way into non-shovel ready jobs, don’t you understand this? And with lower gas prices this new never-ending tax scheme will hardly be noticed by GOOBER’S stupid Americans!
Sounds like a great plan! /s
Based on similar votes earlier this week, would they not both be “liberal?”
Republicans have not been the party of limited government for a couple of decades.
Right.
Because they're not really the party of limited government?
The correct question is, Why is the Republican Party still considered the party of small government?
You’d have your answer if you can spot the lie in your question.
Not at all. As long as we keep the supply increased, the price per gallon will stay down and an increase in the tax will be barely noticeable to the consumer. If shale oil fails, OPEC will, once again, have total control over the market and will quickly decrease the supply to raise the price again which will be bad for America and good for all the people we hate the most. I am normally very much for free trade and low taxes but in this case, we have too much riding on shale oil. I think an increase in the fuel taxes would be an excellent idea if, and only if, it were used to subsidize the shale oil revolution.
