The Telegraph ^ | 1/15/2015 | Nick Squires

Pope Francis has weighed into the debate over freedom of expression in the wake of the religious attacks in Paris, saying that anyone who insults a religion can expect a "punch in the nose".

...

He said "If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother [Mary?], he can expect a punch in the nose."

Throwing a pretend punch, the Pope said: "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

Note that being polite does not mean not offending.

Thank you, sometimes its easy for me to forget those scriptures that don't jive with my personality. You have a very good point. Speak the truth and don't pull any punches with the truth, to do otherwise would be actually not be blessing your enemy (we should want them to see the truth not to continue down the wrong path). However, there is not point to go out of our way to be impolite to them; I know when I'm tempted to its usually out of a spirit of self-rigteousness not meekness. Or as I have to remind myself: despite the frequent examples on the Internet you can't convince people of an error by simply telling them they are idiots.

Not my pope. My folks escaped the papists in 1622.

Speaking of “full bore on free speech”, I want to see just that as a reality. If people really mean that, we should see these “offensive” cartoons everywhere. Every news network, every newspaper bigger than the Podunk County Weekly Ag Report (I excuse them for lack of space), every news magazine worth its salt, rent space on city busses!

Give these easily insulted ragheads so damn many targets they don’t know where to start. We the worshipers of free speech should be seeing these cartoons every time we turn around. I saw the same after 9/11. within a few days, one couldn’t find pictures of the towers falling ANYWHERE. Might incite or inflame. Well dammit we NEEDED to be incited, inflamed and mad as Hell.

Remember, you’re saying this from the point of view of an anonymous poster in a forum. He is speaking as the leader of over a billion people, and a head of a country. A much different point of view, and different context than that of you or I...

No, we should kill murderous savages. They make up a miniscule part of Islam.

Why do you all see the world in such simple black and white? If they are savages, they should be savaged.

Its the same here as it is there.

But, I dont know why its OK to insult people who have done nothing to you.

And once again, I will say it because I can the see the hamsters running in your head....savages should be killed.

Amen!

Unfortunately, there are many who hate Catholicism. To some, anything the Pope or Catholics in general do is going to be wrong in their eyes. This isn't even the first forum on this topic...

"It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."

Sure you can.

And people who are not psychotic and follow Ephesians 4:26 will write you letters, pray for you, tell you that you are wrong and boycott your business.

Crazy out of control people who follow the devil will attempt to do you harm.

Which are you?

“But, I dont know why its OK to insult people who have done nothing to you.”

Mohammed is the one who was insulted. He WAS a murderous savage. I’m not seeing anything inappropriate about making fun of a scoundrel like him, or anyone who is corrupt enough to follow him.

Go sell your “religion of peace” tripe somewhere else.

...saying that anyone who insults a religion can expect a "punch in the nose".

An incompetent translation; what he said in Italian, was anyone who insults my mother can "expect a fist."
A subtle difference perhaps, but clearly a metaphor.

Fortunately, he was NOT speaking ex-cathedra, but as a man, not as the Pope, and as far as I'm concerned, all is well in Dar al-harb.

The only time Jesus got angry was with the money changers in the temple. I wonder how much money the Vatican has in the bank, property and art.

That ignorant childish argument again.
I choose to ignore it.

You could not be more incorrect about me. You have no idea.

But, I will not insult you and your ignorant thoughts.

Have a good weekend. Go kill yourself some muzzies and think about how Jeezuz luvs you.

The Church has had many towering intellectuals, but Frances is not one of them.

By definition, a populist does not flaunt his intellectualism. Humility is one of the most valued qualities in the best-loved Popes.

Mind you, I personally think this one is overly obsessed with things that are Caesar's.

Maybe Malachy's prophecy is worth another look.

Or not.
A casual check will confirm that the so-called prophecy is open-ended.
The last 112 Popes may be defined in a decade, or in year 2525...

“You could not be more incorrect about me. You have no idea.”

Well, I can only judge you by your own statements, so maybe go back and re-read those if you want to see where people would get the wrong impression.
