Tesla P85D Destroys Dodge Challenger Hellcat On Dragstrip: Electric Car Thrashes 707-HP Hemi (Video)
Green Car Reports ^ | Jan 19, 2015 | John Voelcker

Say "P85D" to Tesla owners and fans, and you will see the drooling and twitching and heavy breathing and lustful stares--and more drooling--that Tesla's fastest, highest-performance electric car brings.

The same happens with the word "Hellcat" for fans of high-powered Hemi V-8 performance.

Now, courtesy of two owners--each convinced that their car is the fastest, baddest beast on the road--we know what happens when the two cars face off on the drag strip.

Two days ago at Palm Beach International Raceway, a Tesla Model S P85D and a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat competed in the traditional quarter-mile drag race.

Hint: It's no contest. At all. And the quieter car wins decisively.

...

And, now, can we please stop with the "wimpy electric golf car" stuff?

The Hemi driver lost it on the starting line. However there is no mention in the article of the elapsed time in the quarter mile for both vehicles. I used to work at a local drag strip and saw production cars from the early 1970s routinely run sub 11 second elapsed times in the quarter mile. I would like to see the Tesla take on a real muscle car with a competent driver.

The Dodge had a god-awful start—it was backing up and repositioning when the Tesla took off. Still, very impressive.

My first thought was that was the driver's first time driving a stick....Whatever the problem, my Ford Focus could have done better than that.

The Tesla has a motor for each wheel. Put a Hemi on each wheel and see what the Dodge can do! That’s a CAR, baby!

Actually, I believe that the Tesla has only one motor which drives only the rear wheels, but the problem here with the Dodge isn’t horsepower, it’s traction. The Tesla has full torque at dead stop and does’t need a clutch or a transmission. Much easier for the driver to control wheel spin.

if there’s anything Tesla knows how to do better than making a few battery-cars for rich liberals,
it is in generating (pardon the bad pun) all kinds of favorable publicity for its little venture

if they even go out of business (as 99% of car companies have over the years, anyway), they’ve got at least one really clever PR person that some other company’s going to grab right away!

Difference was a really bad drive - where in the world does a 700 hp car only hit 85 mph in a quarter. If someone wants to pump electric cars don’t use that video it is misleading to those who don’t know and a joke to those who do.

Totally bogus “race”. The Hellcat runs at least an 11 second quarter mile.

Your liberal propaganda for electric vehicles is well known and total bullshit. It they were so viable they wouldn’t need taxpayer money to be produced and you wouldn’t need to post such obvious crap as this.

You really should stop lying to people, liberal.

“They had to put a battery charger on the Tesla to get it back to the garage area after the race....”

More likely they had to fill up the Challenger. Electricity weights next to nothing compared to gasoline.

Anyone that ever played with RC cars knows what awesome potential electric has for power.

It was explained that the Tesla has two motors and 4 wheel drive, thus no smoking of the tires...instant and continuous traction from the start.

I still can't believe the Dodge performed so poorly.....

I prefer not to be a Luddite and embrace the new electric car technology.

You know, it is possible to be a Conservative and look ahead to a time when we won’t need gasoline for our vehicles.

I’m still driving a 1984 Mercedes 300D turbo diesel, which is probably heavier and definitely not in the same shape as that 5 series, but I still get 25mpg combined and haven’t sunk a dime into it in years.

Great car...good for millions of miles....and you can fix most things yourself with spare parts from the pick n pull.....but you might want to get an occasional tune up and re-furbished injectors.

Not to mention that Musk admitted that Tesla won’t make a profit until 2020!

Gas muscle cars aren’t dead. Yeah, electric cars are hot off the line … they’ve got lots of torque. Also, the Dodge jumped the lights, stopped, then started again after the Tesla had already left the line. I’d like to see a rematch.

” it should not have stood up to a 700 hp car unless the driver wanted to lose”

You are saying a car with 691 hp, AWD and more low-end torque should not have stood up to a 700 hp car?????

“The Tesla ran a 17.46 quarter with a top speed of 82 mph. I had a Pontiac LeMans years ago that would do that.”

I’ve got a 2015 BMW x1 35i that can run it much faster than 17 seconds; about 14 seconds at most. The Tesla is a slow pig for all its supposed 691 HP. Heck, the BMW runs 0-60 in 5.1 seconds.

I remember screwing a 9 turn Trinity electric motor into a Losi XXX buggy in 2000. I remember my jaw dropping watching my formerly sedate off-road toy turn into a 50+mph (in about 2 seconds) rocket.

I also remember the size of the batteries it took. And NIMH or not, the recharge ritual on multiple packs.

Fast. Brutally fast. But 15 years later, still not a replacement for Nitro ;)

Tesla Model S P85D, $120,170 base price. 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, $59,995 base price.

And the Hellcat is loads more fun!
