Congress hasnt even been in session a month and a raft of Republicans are already being threatened with primaries in 2016.
The reasons run the gamut, from backing John Boehner for speaker to objecting to an anti-abortion bill. One congressman is under fire for failing to amass clout that would help his district on a key issue. Its the latest proof that divisions within the GOP are very much alive, despite the triumph of the establishment GOP wing over the tea party in last years midterms.
Since the new Congress kicked off Jan. 6, more than a half-dozen Republican congressmen and senators have drawn potential challengers from the right an unusual level of intra-party electoral strife this early in the campaign season. Many of the incumbents have reputations as solid conservatives lawmakers like North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers, who was elected on the tea party wave of 2010, and Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran, who oversaw the partys Senate campaign arm in the midterms but have nonetheless drawn the ire of tea party adversaries.
A few of the potential challengers are mulling repeat bids after losing in 2014, betting that growing voter discontent with incumbents will put them over the top in two years. Many of the primary campaigns are almost certain to fizzle once the reality of what it takes to dethrone a sitting lawmaker sets in. Regardless, its a rude awakening for a Republican establishment that hoped it had put insurgent challenges to rest.
There is an unprecedented level of disquiet, said Daniel Horowitz, who has worked as a political strategist for tea party groups. Theres a sense that the Republicans in Washington dont share the beliefs of the conservative platform, or dont fight for them.

Remember that in the Senate primaries of 2014, despite their eventual victories, Establishment incumbents did worse and worse as time went on:
Cornyn - 60% McConnell - 60% Graham - 55% Cochran - 50% Alexander - 48% Roberts - 47%
Well, it’s about gosh durned time.....
Add Mia Love to the list....has a lot of nice things written on her web site....but voted for the weeper.
just keep the pressure up or we attack them
After being declared dead by the MSM how many times?
Very disappointed in Mia Love:
Rebel to Quisling in 0.01 seconds...
an unusual level of intra-party electoral strife this early in the campaign season.
There are lots of big talkers in the GOP. But talk is cheap and often evasive. We see that election after election after election.
We need to make it clear that its time for actions and tangible results that support conservative causes. Or else they’re gone.
“After being declared dead by the MSM how many times?”
Which reminds me: This past weekend Howard Dean said that the people seeing Sniper were angry Tea Party members. $213 million box office and climbing? He must be saying that there are a lot of Tea Party people.
And she joined the Congressional Black Caucus.
OK. I have read all the responses and I am going to go out on a limb and in the process, irritate a few folks.
Some of you posters need to grow up a bit. You need to have a bit of patience for the new congress folks. Although I was not in favor of selecting Boehner again as Speaker, it is way TOOOOOOOOO early to be denouncing our GOP congress critters based on one vote. In fact it is a bit of idiocy.
Are some of you suffering from St. Vitus Dance? Cannot you settle down a bit before you decide that you are never, Never, NEVER going to vote for s0-and-so again?
There, I have had my say. Let our GOP controlled Congress have some time to pass some bills, and if, in the end, they disappoint you, then it will be OK to criticize them.
Remember, Ronald Reagan, in order to get the most important bills passed, allowed a few he did not like past him too. He figured certain bills were essential and others were desired, and other were favored. He set priorities.
Oh, and one more thing. When RR was Governor of California he signed a pro-choice bill. Yet, you all have forgiven him for this - he later said it was a mistake. Give these newcomers a bot of space and time. PLEASE.
Translation: “We thought we got rid of these TEA Party people! What do have to do, put them in concentration camps!?”
The GOPe needs to be taken to task for their lame-duck session behaviors.
You didn’t irritate me. Quite the opposite, yours is about the only one on this thread that didn’t.
“lawmakers like North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers, who was elected on the tea party wave of 2010, and Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran, who oversaw the partys Senate campaign arm in the midterms but have nonetheless drawn the ire of tea party adversaries.”
Ellmers help stop anti-abortion legislation and Moran who ysed NRSC funds in the Mississippi primary to buy ads directed at democrats to support cochran in the runoff. The ads called McDaniel and his supporters racist, bigots, klansmen and those who want to starve poor people. moron was complicit with roger wicker.
We’re back? Shucks, we never left.
I agree. These people are band new to the town; have had maybe 1.5 months to arrange housing, find and try and vet staff, figure out where their office is, deal with all the presstitues, party heads, getting pulled in a hundered different directions, and then, after being sworn in, are confronted with this vote for speaker whom they probably only just met, and don’t know all the other players, etc., etc.
As for Mia joining the CBC. How many conservatives are members? Someone has to wade into that den of vipers and sing a different tune.
So, let’s let them get settled and see how things go. They’re there for two years. After that, then they have to answer for their actions.
Your #11: some good common sense. Thanks.
I did it here in WNY, We formatted a press release and blasted it out to all our members and the media. With in hours my congress critter send me a nasty response, so I did the same back to him. He will not rollover us so I will continue to get in his face.
NOW is the time to start campaigning!
Oppose those in conservative districts in primaries.
Oppose those in “purple” districts in the general election with a conservative third-party candidate. Yes, it’s come to that IMO.
