The family of an Oregon first-grader is outraged that his school forced the boy to sit by himself during lunch as punishment for being late.
The boy’s grandmother, Laura Hoover, took to Facebook to protest his retribution with photos of Hunter sulking into a cardboard wall blocking his view of a cafeteria bustling with his peers.
“His momma’s car sometimes doesn’t like to start right up. Sometimes he’s a couple minutes late to school. Yesterday, he was one minute late,” Hoover wrote. “This is what his momma discovered they do to punish him.”
His mother, Nicole Garloff, came to check on little Hunter at Lincoln Elementary in Grants Pass on Tuesday and ended up taking him home. She found him staring at his stark food tray in tears over the whole ordeal.

Why is the child punished when it’s the parent who can’t get him to school on time?
Seems to me if the car is unreliable, Mom should invest in a new car, or if that’s not possible, she should plan to leave early. I think the unreliable car is just an excuse.
Maybe from now in little hunters momma will start the car earlier
Maybe from now in little hunter will be on time
Something tells me this is not a first time or one time thing and momma hasn’t cared to remedy her tardiness problem

Definitely the parent’s fault, but segregating the kid at lunch with a cardboard box like he’s some kind of freak of nature seems excessive.
Remember, he’s not a teenager, or even a pre-teen, he’s a little boy.
What do they do to teachers that are late...?
Apparently, it wasn’t a one time thing. The child’s grandmother said the car doesn’t always start.
Well momma needs to get up earlier or find a carpool. That is not the schools problem and having a kid continuously disrupt class when everyone else is sitting there ready to work is not acceptable
Shunning is bullying and abusive and teachers who use it ought to be fired.
My son was made to sit in the hall and when he tried to look in, the stupid imbecile “teacher” taped paper over the glass. I resent her and depise the public school system. The teachers and the parents act like highschoolers themselves. The administrators hate kids and are just there to collect their piece of the government dole.
This would have never happened to a black kid.
Maybe his father should bring him.
Or tot he teachers that have sex in the classroom?
A very minor punishment for a very minor offense.

Once upon a time, I had a “teacher” humiliate me in class.
In retrospect, it was a good thing the other kids were laughing so hard, the “teacher” didn’t hear what I said back to him.
I would have been expelled for sure.
This creep was universally hated by kids and real teachers alike. He only lasted one year there, and was gone.
This is as ridiculous as sending a student to the “thought room” to sit alone so they can think about the rule they broke. I know a student who was sent there only to think, “boy is this stupid - it’s more punishment to be in class.” She sat a read magazines for an hour.
The cardboard screen seems a bit excessive, but separation from one’s friends at lunch time was a commonly used punishment in my elementary school.
And it worked. Lunch was one of the few times during the day when students could exercise their rights to freedom of association. Being deprived of that right was aggravating and annoying and we tried to avoid it.
Really? A “miniature Third Reich” because a kid was made to eat his lunch all my himself?
Ffs, when I was at school the teachers do that when we misbehaved. They had to do something when they abolished corporal punishment. Parents who think their kids are precious, sensitive little poppets who are beyond being punished for acting out of line are part of the reason society is going down the pan.
I don’t care if the child is late every single day, this “punishment” is ridiculous and if it were my child, I would be furious.
Who do these people think they are? All the more reason to home school if possible.
