Oregon first-grader humiliated by school’s punishment after being 1 minute late to class
NY Daily News ^

The family of an Oregon first-grader is outraged that his school forced the boy to sit by himself during lunch as punishment for being late.

The boy’s grandmother, Laura Hoover, took to Facebook to protest his retribution with photos of Hunter sulking into a cardboard wall blocking his view of a cafeteria bustling with his peers.

“His momma’s car sometimes doesn’t like to start right up. Sometimes he’s a couple minutes late to school. Yesterday, he was one minute late,” Hoover wrote. “This is what his momma discovered they do to punish him.”

His mother, Nicole Garloff, came to check on little Hunter at Lincoln Elementary in Grants Pass on Tuesday and ended up taking him home. She found him staring at his stark food tray in tears over the whole ordeal.

Well thank God we are done with that mess, the teacher is fired (hoisted on her own petard, not because of anything I did) and my son is graduated and, matter of fact, that school is closed.

Humiliating a child is not the solution. Betcha prin missy fitzsimmons would not allow her precious progeny to be publicly ostracized in this way.

An incompetent administrator and mindless of the harm done to children who are punished for a “crime” beyond the child’s control.

I looked at the mom’s FB page. Doesn’t look like a druggie to me. So quick to judge when you have no idea what you are talking about. No wonder so many people hate conservatives. Judge now - ask questions later.

I wonder, for the homeschoolers, what would you do if you had a student who was consistently tardy? Would they face any “punishment”?

If not, why not? What makes this student “special”? Why are the students who arrive punctually subject to the disruption of one student?

If so, what would you view as an acceptable form of corrective behavior?

Thank you, yes this broad hated boys. And my son’s class was full of smart sassy boys from in tact families, Boy Scouts, church (gasp), had pencils, light, dinner at 6, clean sheets. Some of the teachers were jealous and resentful, that is an issue too.

Please explain to me what is “liberal” about punishing a student for excessive tardiness.

I went to elementary school before the federal DOE was formed. The school administration was quite conservative, and making kids stand in the hall for a few minutes if they were being disruptive, or requiring them to be isolated from their friends at lunch for some minor behavioral problem were regular punishments.

But it was not “liberal” or “conservative”, it was simply punishment.

Not EVERYTHING can, or should, be divided in to “liberal” vs “conservative”.

A personal attack would be just that - personal. I only do that on Facebook.

“His momma’s car sometimes doesn’t like to start right up.”

Maybe momma should try starting her car a few minutes earlier.

Problem solved.

Liberals punish the weak and let the responsible party go. Should the kid drive himself?

He wasn’t misbehaving. We wouldn’t punish an adult that way, ever. They did it because they can. That doesn’t make it morally right.

There is something wrong with a school that makes a child cry like this. How can he eat and function when being segregated like a criminal. This is sick. The child did nothing wrong. I say child abuse.

Well sock it to me then

I must have been proudly dragging kids into DSS hell for over 50 years or whatever a mandated reporter is supposed to do,when a kid suffers from lack of parental responsibility

Humiliating a child is not the solution.

Simply throwing them out without any ceremony, drama or fanfare is a pretty good solution.

When adults betray a child it does have long lasting repercussions. My memory...was playing with a friend and she accidentally got hurt. My mother conspired with the friends mother to send me to the house to pick up some cookies she had baked. I knocked on door and was immediately verbally attacked. No cookies either. I Never trusted an adult again.

I am a mandated reporter and I would never call DSS for a mother getting her child to school a minute late, even if she did it frequently. Hours late, maybe...minutes, never. Life happens, some can handle it, some can’t. This mother took time out of her day, after rushing her son to school to come check on him...hardly screams neglectful parent to me.

What did the first grader do to deserve to be humiliated?

No as usual we never hear the school’s report, only what some outraged parent posts to Facebook about how some little fuzz bot is mistreated by the mean school for being late 1 minute, or well maybe being late a few times, or well the car don’t always start on time so blame the car

Btw the story says parent met school and all has been resolved

Want to bet JR. will be on time from now on?

It’s not the kid’s fault his mother’s car has issues. If the kid was late because he was screwing around or misbehaving is one thing. But this is needless bullying on the schools part.

I’m surprised at the scorn of the comments from so many. This child is 7 years old-kids this age still run to give Mom and Dad a hug and like to be tucked in at night.
