The Otoe County clerk said she wont issue marriage licenses to gay couples, even though a federal judge ordered her to start doing so next week.
U.S. District Court Judge Joseph Bataillon on Monday morning ordered county clerks and other state officials to treat same-sex couples the same as heterosexual couples when processing marriage licenses or determining the rights, protection or benefits of marriage.
Bataillon's order takes effect March 9, but Otoe County Clerk Janene Bennett said she still wont issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples because of her Catholic beliefs -- no matter what.
Its Gods law. Marriage was instituted for man and woman for procreation, she said Monday morning.
Bennett said shes not sure if shell block her subordinates from issuing licenses to same-sex couples. She said she needs to discuss the issue with her parish priest before making a decision.
So far, she said, no same-sex couples have asked her office about getting a marriage license. She said her office issues 90 to 100 licenses a year.

Oops - she threw down the glove.
I'm sure every queer in Nebraska is stampeding to her office at this very moment, just to get in her face.
I hope she sticks to her guns - I expect she will back down...
The day is coming when we’re all going to be faced with a similar decision. “Choose today which master you will serve ...”
If they try to discipline her she can sue them into bankruptcy since not only does she have a 14th protected right but a specific right protected by the 1st.
Why cant states defy the Federal government on this like Sanctuary cities do?
We see it here. And we see it with issues such as wedding business people being sued for not servicing homosexual marriages.
We are now required to endorse and honor homosexuality and homosexual marriage in public life. All who resist are targeted for destruction. Religious or any other conscientious objection to homosexuality will simply not be tolerated in this brave new politically correct world we live in now.
It’s a rural county so I doubt she’ll be tested any time soon.
You can only defy the federal government if done in support of a liberal cause of the day. Sanctuary cities for illegal aliens is one such issue. Legalizing marijuana in various states is permitted even though such legalization directly conflicts with federal drug laws.
But on marriage we see homosexual marriage being forced down our throats by eager federal judges.
She’ll be tested as soon as the lavender mafia finds out about her. They will line up to make sure she’s fired.
An hour’s drive from Omaha, I’m sure her office is full of queers already.
I think we see there are no consistent criteria as to the conncections between federal and state laws, which take priority, or even whether certain laws are even enforced. Part of our immigration problems are due to the fact that we don’t really enforce our immigration laws, for example.
Try that Brokeback Mountain crap in the 1880’s and see what happens.
Three people, a puppy and a banana should go in for 5-way Marriage License and sue if they don’t get it.
For a minute take out God and tradition. Show on the books where a judge can invent laws from the bench and force people to obey non existent laws? The clerk is doing her duty to uphold “Caesar’s” law.
Good on her. Hope she stands firm.
And you know what would help her to do so? If We the People get off our cans and actually contact her to let her know we support her, instead of just talking about it on websites.
Would be nice if the conservatives there would come out and support her.
“Bennett said shes not sure if shell block her subordinates from issuing licenses to same-sex couples. She said she needs to discuss the issue with her parish priest before making a decision”
That is very refreshing as we would be in a better place if every government official consulted with their parish priest before making political and administrative decisions.
as one of those horrible evangelicals i would rather see even this happen, then the whole scene be lost to rank ungodliness
