I’m Gay and I (Sort Of) Agree With Ben Carson
Daily Beast ^ | 03/05/2015 | Sally Kohn

On Wednesday, perpetually controversial conservative Ben Carson told CNN’s Chris Cuomo that being gay is “absolutely” a choice.

I agree, kind of. Last week I wrote an essay for the Washington Post in which I talked about wanting my daughter to be gay—implicitly and explicitly challenging the idea long advanced by gay rights advocates that being gay is not a choice. I’m not saying being gay necessarily is a conscious choice for many queer folks today, but I am saying it should be able to be a choice—and one that is “equally desirable to being straight.”

In other words, for me, the idea that people might be able to choose to be gay is a natural extension of eliminating the second-class, lesser-than status of gayness in society.

This is, however, not the case for Ben Carson. Mr. Carson is most definitively not endorsing the full moral and social equality of gayness.

Asked why he thinks being gay is a choice, Carson said, “Because a lot of people who go into prison, go into prison straight—and when they come out they’re gay. So did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question.”

Yes, obviously they all met Alex Voss and, bam, they were gay. If orange is the new black, prisons are the new women’s colleges. This, incidentally, is literally the only potentially positive twist on America’s atrociously skyrocketing rates of incarceration over the last 50 years.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of the current NYC mayor, made the choice to switch teams (homo to hetero in this case).

Odd eh? Then again, it looks to me that Dr. Carson is wishy washy on subjects that are “somewhat” controversial. Kinda like his wishy washy stance on the 2nd amendment. If you have to keep amending your thoughts or position, then you ain’t qualified. It’s not brain surgery or rocket science.

Of course it is a choice.

There is no homosexual gene. If they do not believe in God then they must believe in nature and nature intended to have a man have sex with a woman to have babies.

What about Ann Heche? I know women in RL too who made the switch, both ways.

The anecdote proves nothing. If being gay were genetic, then being bi would also be genetic, so having someone state that they think it’s a choice only proves they are bi, not that being gay can’t possibly be genetic.

I didn’t know Sally Kohn was gay. That explains a lot of her writing, which I find to be excrable.

Our niece came out a few years ago-it was a shock to all of us to say the least, and devastating to her parents. A counselor told them that while it is possible to change, this area of sin is one of the most difficult to overcome.

She was homeschooled until 9th grade, it wasn’t until she out of college and during a period of depression that she “realized” she was gay. An older woman convinced her of that, and they have been together since. She is a completely different person now. Her countenance, personality, mannerisms have all changed. She is sinking deeper in the pit of her sin and it shows.

Homosexuality was once classified as a mental illness and watching the change in our niece it seems obvious that it still should be. Maybe as much a choice as depression or any other mental illness is a choice. Like others with a mental illness, those afflicted are totally in denial.

Its not brain surgery.

I see what you did there.

Interesting word choice as Dr. Carson is a neurosurgeon.

A gay guy I’ve known for my whole life says that most homosexuals really aren’t. He says that 90% are only gay as a political tool or for the victim perks. He says its why so many gays and lesbians are angry all the time.

The sex positive agenda finally opens up to some honesty. "Born that way" is a red herring. They don't give a damn what the cause is, they want all moral objections to sexual pairings of every kind removed (regardless of sex, age, relation, marital status, number, or species of partner(s)).

It's as big a lie as "only about consenting adults in private". It's being advocated in our public schools to minors and in California, parents are even being prohibited from counseling their children to reconsider heterosexuality.

Actually, she has a point regarding "choice" because when you look like this, you really have no choice:

RE: I am saying it should be able to be a choice—and one that is “equally desirable to being straight.”

Why not just make it more straightdforward and frank by saying this -— “I am saying that devout Christians throw away all religious convictions and their belief in Church and Biblical teachings about sexuality.”

Shheesh, she has to say it in a roundabout way when this is what she really wants.

The biggest howler for me is when I hear someone say, “If you haven’t tried it, don’t knock it.” I don’t have to try self-immolation either, to know that it would suck. lol

The guy I know has no interest in activism or “gay rights”. He says he has no interest in displaying his sexuality to the world and just wants to be left alone.

The only reason I know about it is because I grew up with the guy and knew it before he did. After all, it just ain’t normal for 15 year old boys to be that into the marriage of Charles and Dianna.
