How Do we Decide Who Is a ‘Real’ Candidate for President?
Washington Post ^

Posted on 03/26/2015 11:06:28 AM PDT by nickcarraway

Ted Cruz was not the first person to officially declare his presidential candidacy when he announced on Monday. Scores of people are running just as officially as the junior senator from Texas, as measured by their having filled out the proper form with the Federal Election Commission. So why do we consider Cruz a "real" candidate and those other 200-odd candidates not worth mentioning?

Is it viability? Few people think Cruz has much of a shot at the Republican nomination. The Upshot's Nate Cohn makes the case against his doing so pretty concretely. We looked at the strength of his plan to ride tea party support on Wednesday: He trails among tea party voters badly.

Here's another question. Very few people consider Donald Trump a real candidate for president. He has threatened to start an exploratory committee, which means next to nothing. In part, he's treated as a joke because that's how he treats the idea of running for president: as a lark. But in part, it's also because he consistently says things that make it hard for him to be taken seriously. He has perfected the ability to sound like a dope in fewer than 140 characters, all bravado and extremism and sales pitches. He's a @carnivalbarker, and he gets the respect that that deserves.

Look to the debates—the coming scandals—and their record. That will tell the tale.

“”Heck, how do we decide who is a real voter.”

It is extremely hard in today’s World, where all our perceptions (emotions) have been largely controlled by the few elite cabal who want only power and control over your mind. (I don’t watch TV (dog and pony show). I choose my sources from very few trusted sources-—and even those sources, I am leery of-—since anyone with a platform can be a “useful idiot”.

Truth wil set you Free. Well, yes, but HOW do you know the Truth. So much is hidden and most is “Smoke and Mirrors”. As Reagan stated, it ain’t what you know, it is what you know that ain’t so, that matters.

You decide the Truth by going to original sources only——don’t take anyone else biased concepts unless it is a truly reliable person who is known for truth. Also you judge by actions——the past actions, and most of all, you look at the family and friends....who does he “love” and how moral are these people who formed his Soul. Is he a narcissist, or can he truly be humble, self-sacrificing and truly love (have strong moral character).

I like Cruz’s father’s mind a lot and he had a great influence (of course) on his son. He suffered and people who truly suffer become very wise if they turn to God and don’t turn to hate and nihilism.

“How Do we Decide Who Is a ‘Real’ Candidate for President?”

Well, you could start by being a Democrat. Their bench is so thin they can only run a failed ex-secretary of state whose is famous chiefly for being a first lady.

The Republican side, however, has so many strivers for the nomination it is hard for the DNC to know who the media should be instructed to Palinize first. Destroying candidates takes time, you know.

Few people think he has a chance...

Really, who are those people? Cruz has a better chance than JEB or Krispy Kreme...

Let me translate: WaPo is saying Cruz is "not a real candidate."

Cruz really has them scared, doesn't he?

Thanks Washington Compost, but no one cares what you partisan media shills write. And no, the Democrat in all but name and demagogue Rand Paul won't be in the running.
Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"
I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.

Rand Paul: Time for GOP to soften war stance
...by softening its edge on some volatile social issues and altering its image as the party always seemingly "eager to go to war... We do need to expand the party and grow the party and that does mean that we don't always all agree on every issue" ... the party needs to become more welcoming to individuals who disagree with basic Republican doctrine on emotional social issues such as gay marriage... "We're going to have to be a little hands off on some of these issues ... and get people into the party," Paul said.

Rand Paul's immigration speech
...The Republican Party must embrace more legal immigration.

Unfortunately, like many of the major debates in Washington, immigration has become a stalemate-where both sides are imprisoned by their own rhetoric or attachment to sacred cows that prevent the possibility of a balanced solution.

Immigration Reform will not occur until Conservative Republicans, like myself, become part of the solution. I am here today to begin that conversation.

Let's start that conversation by acknowledging we aren't going to deport 12 million illegal immigrants.

If you wish to work, if you wish to live and work in America, then we will find a place for you...

This is where prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into being taxpaying members of society.

Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers.12 million more people assimilating into society. 12 million more people being productive contributors.

Rand Paul calls on conservatives to embrace immigration reform
Latinos, should be a natural constituency for the party, Paul argued, but "Republicans have pushed them away with harsh rhetoric over immigration." ...he would create a bipartisan panel to determine how many visas should be granted for workers already in the United States and those who might follow... [and the buried lead] "Imagine 12 million people who are already here coming out of the shadows to become new taxpayers...

That’s a good question? I only saw the $75,000 - but maybe what I saw was a misprint.

I’ll check it out; if I can find the article.

A “Real” Candidate for the Presidency is one who has declared himself to be a Presidential candidate.

So far - TED CRUZ is the only candidate.

Well, based on the experience of the last 22 years, that is determined by the Late-Night Comics, The Daily Show, and Oprah.

Early caucuses and primaries are ideal for getting throwaway looks at would-be candidates.

The problem is that the GOPe has front-loaded the nomination process with open primaries in big-money states, expressly for the purpose of nominating another RINO. We must short-circuit that process with cash to ONE (1) conservative candidate.

Obviously, if somebody is a senator or a governor or (even a) representative he or she is a "real" candidate, even if they have no chance of getting elected. A big city mayor would also qualify though one of those almost certainly won't get elected.

I don't really have a problem with calling Ben Carson or Herman Cain or Steve Forbes or Pat Robertson or Ross Perot a "real" candidate, even if they never ran for anything before, provided their poll numbers are high enough.

Donald Trump isn't a "real" candidate. He could conceivably become one, but right now he fits into the "joke candidate" slot pretty nicely.

I don't really see a problem in any of this, though some may appreciate the irony: a Senator or Congressman can run against Washington for years, yet only be considered a "real" candidate because they have the Washington connection that the amateurs don't.
