Missouri Republicans are trying to ban food stamp recipients from buying steak and seafood
Washington Post ^ | 04/03/2015 | By Roberto A. Ferdman

In 2013, Fox News proudly broadcast an interview with a young food stamp recipient who claimed to be using the government benefit to purchase lobster and sushi.

"This is the way I want to live and I don’t really see anything changing," Greenslate explained to Fox. “It’s free food; it’s awesome."

That story fit a longtime conservative suspicion that poor people use food stamps to purchase luxury items. Now, a Republican state lawmaker in Missouri is pushing for legislation that would stop people like Greenslate and severely limit what food stamp recipients can buy. The bill being proposed would ban the purchase with food stamps of "cookies, chips, energy drinks, soft drinks, seafood or steak."

"The intention of the bill is to get the food stamp program back to it's original intent, which is nutrition assistance," said Rick Brattin, the representative who is sponsoring the proposed legislation.

Curbing food stamp purchases of cookies, chips, energy drinks, and soft drinks at least falls in line with the food stamp program's mission to provide nutrition. Nutrition experts are already discussing whether to remove unhealthy items from the list of foods participants can buy.

But seafood and steak? Seafood has been shown, time and again, to be a healthy part of any diet. And steak is such a broad category that it's essentially banning people from buying any flat cuts of beef, from porterhouse to flank.

"It just seems really repressive," said Mark Rank, a professor at...

I always had a feeling that the Dollar stores work in a similar fashion on some of their items.

Like I said, you would fit in nicely with the tyranny crowd. Isn’t this the exact mind set of Moochelle Obama and her school lunch program? Yes, it is - hypocrite.

I’m not forcing anybody to follow “my rules.” I’m simply saying take your filthy mitts out of my pocket. Eat whatever you want to eat; but don’t force me (you filthy tyrant) to pay for it.

Is that simple enough?

It’s one thing to offer a safety net as long as it isn’t used as a hammock.

Shop carefully and some fish is cheaper than ground beef.

Curbing food stamp purchases of cookies, chips, energy drinks, and soft drinks...

Does that include Skittles?

But seafood and steak? Seafood has been shown, time and again, to be a healthy part of any diet.

OK, fair enough. Buy canned salmon and tuna. No lobster and shrimp.

And steak is such a broad category that it's essentially banning people from buying any flat cuts of beef, from porterhouse to flank.

So what? Get a job and you can buy what you like.

Many working people do eat beans and rice. This is because they don’t have enough money after taxes to get steak and seafood. Taxes that allow welfare people to have steak and seafood.

By the way, it’s “progressives” like you and Obama who want to force us to pay for other peoples’ lifestyles.

I don’t want you collectivist losers to tell me how to live nor pay my way. I don’t give a damn what someone else crams down their throat as long as I’m not bank rolling their choices.

Never thought that buying seafood in Missouri was all that good of an idea anyway.

Dollars to doughnuts this person is selling those spare ribs and steaks in their neighborhood for .50 - .75 on the dollar.

Why do some on here always assume that because a person receives food stamps that they are boozers or druggies?

Nah, not druggies or boozers, just lazy a f***. I see it first hand almost everyday. I see the noble poor, who are on asssitance selling their EBT cards for cash. Right now I could go buy one iin about 5 minutes. I see the down and out buying a cart of food with EBT, then pulling out a wad of cash to pay for a cart load of crap at Walmart. I see the neighborhoods of the EBT crowd, who just want to eat healthy, full of fast food restaurants and newly opened dyalysys centers.

I know several people who get them and do NOT fit into this category

In today's America, the down and out who truly need the assisance EBT offers are the exception, not the rule. The system is corrupt and full of people who have no intention of getting out of the system and paying their own way.

I think some of you on here would fit in nicely with the tyranny crowd.

There is a rule in my house, if I am paying your bills, you are not an adult, no matter how old you are. If society is footing the bill for these people society SHOULD be able to dictate how it is inacted. They tyranny comes in the form of a government which takes money from others and uses it as largess. That tyranny is only reinforced by those that demonize the people who speak out against it.

Limit EBT cards to only healthy foods just like the WIC program. If Michelle O was serious about addressing poor nutrition she should be pushing this change.

My retirement job is in the wine & spirits department of a major grocery chain. I have seen it all...EBT recipients buying steaks, crab legs and every sort of junk food. However, the most flagrant abuse I have seen is where a customer pays $10 cash for a bottle of rotgut whiskey and then whips out his EBT card to buy a 99 cent bottle of soda as mixer.

Well, you certainly are a compassionate one, aren’t you? Filthy mitts? Wow, is all I can say about a heartless person such as yourself. I’m just saying - not everyone buys steak and lobster with food stamps, nor is everyone using them druggies or alcoholics, as some on here are suggesting. I pay taxes too - and I think we have bigger fish to fry in this country than food stamps.

I am using logic, you are the one who is misconstruing things. Our taxes go for many things we have no control over - such as aid to terrorist nations, abortion clinics, etc. Yet, some on her want to rant and rave about what people eat. The irony of it all - and yes, it is tyranny when you want to tell others how to eat and what to eat - you aren’t any different from the leftists in that regard.

I donate through Christian Charities and through my Church. I also help others on a personal level.

Does it ease your conscious to have the government take other peoples’ money, skim a big chunk off the top and “help” the poor via ineffective, wasteful government programs which are more likely to keep generations in poverty?

Take your grubby mitts off my money, go earn your own and practice genuine charity. It might help your soul.

You do realize, don’t you, that your tax dollars also pay the wages of the corrupt politicians in office. Now, if we could do something about that - I would be more than happy to jump on that bandwagon.

In the same vein, when some of you reach retirement age - I think you should be told how you can spend your retirement dollars. Makes sense to me, since some of you want to control how others live.

I’m not a progressive sheep - however, you are a heartless, cruel illogical person. You get lost. Guess you can’t stand your logic being turned inside out and called what it is - tyranny.
