North Charleston, S.C. — A white police officer in South Carolina is charged with murder after a bystander recorded video of him shooting and killing an apparently unarmed black man in the back as he ran way from the scene of a traffic stop.

The New York Times posted the video Tuesday. It is disturbing. (Scroll down to see video.)

Officer Michael T. Slager, 33, claimed he feared for his life because the man took a stun gun during a scuffle Saturday, but the video does not confirm that.

The video shows Slager firing eight times and shooting Walter L. Scott, 50, in the back as Scott loped away across a grassy lot.

Scott was driving a Mercedes-Benz and had been stopped by Slager for a broken tail light, according to police reports cited in the Times story.

“At the time, Scott was wanted for arrest on a Family Court warrant, Charleston County sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson said Tuesday.” (Source: The Post and Courier)

The police reports said Slager fired his Taser at Scott, and Scott turned to run away from the gun’s electrical current, which could be seen extending from his body.

Unfortunately every moron in the country is rubbing themselves raw over this when its really no more worthy of national news than any other murder case.

I disagree. When the men we pay and trust to protect us instead murder citizens in cold blood then I'd say it was a newsworthy event. More so because it is, fortunately, a rare event.

I think he may have picked up the stun gun that had been fired. He should have never done that, obviously. Placing it next to the body makes it appear that the victim had possession of the stun gun at the time of the shooting.

The arrested officer probably told his former attorney what had happened and then when the video came out which contradicted said version of events - bye-bye attorney.

“If there was no video taken, no way the officer gets charged. No. Way.”

True. Which is a pretty sad statement on police accountability - if it takes a video like this to actually convict an officer, think about what other officers might have gotten away with in cases where there was no video.

Did you see the video? I mean you actually took a break from fondling your Auschwitz memorabilia and watched it?

Hard to say. He’s toast, though - should be, IMO.

I agree, you are making a sound point. Anything goes should never be allowed for police recruitment.

Someone else on the forum noted that one of the New York police officers, involved in the controversial death of the heavy guy put in restraint, had full sleeve tattoos on both his arms and legs. I looked at the footage, and realized this was right - at his cuffs and socks, one could see it. He looked like a gang member wearing a police uniform.

Really, this is no different from any other murder case?

Cops shooting folks in the back for no reason is just a drug trade murder over turf?

I don’t believe you’ve thought this through terribly well/

This episode is exactly why you should smell a rat anytime you hear of a law being passed that restricts the right of citizens to make a video recording of a LEO performing his/her job.

I guess they were so thrilled and excited at their kill they still had tunnel vision.

Nope, the white cop ran back to pick up the taser and tried to surreptitiously drop it next to the perp/vic without the black cop noticing. He was focused on controlling the perception of what happened and concerned about the other cop. The black cop was busy attending to the perp/vic.

I don’t believe I give a damn what you clowns think.

Murder is murder, end of story and all the woulda coulda fantasies in the world don’t make any difference.

” Just wondering how many of my tax dollars went toward that Mercedes.”

Wow. Just wow. Talk about your selfish priorities... A man is dead, shot in the back by a “civil servant” and the only thing you wonder about is how he earned his money...

“Just wondering how many of my tax dollars went toward that Mercedes.”

No way to tell. But, we will know how many millions of tax dollars are paid out the the shooting victim’s family as well as the millions spent to prosecute, defend and jail the cop for the next 25 to Life.
