GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WWJ) – A west Michigan business owner claims he’s been the target of death threats after he announced he won’t serve gays.
Brian Klawiter, who owns Dieseltec Automotive Repair in Grandville, posted a message on his business’ Facebook page saying that he is a Christian, and that his company does not welcome “immoral behavior” — including homosexuality.
“Our rights as conservative Americans are being squashed more and more everyday. Apparently if you are white (or close to it), you have a job, go to church, and own a gun… That translates into racists, privileged, bigot, conspiracy theorist.
Wouldn’t be surprises if he is hoping for a fund raiser.
That’s one possibility, though this is asinine and not on the level of what the now-failed RFRA’s were attempting to do.
Well, that’s true, you can refuse service for certain conditions (such as no shirt, no shoes, etc.) but not for a personal characteristic, such as race, sex, etc.
The garage owner is not going to have to perform a wedding for them, I assume, or do anything that would violate any religious duties he may have. I’m sure he takes lots of money from gay people whether he knows it or not, and in any case, unless somebody comes in and says they’re gay and they want they’re car repaired, how is he going to know?
Many people you’d think are gay actually are not gay, but even if they are, repairing their car is not compromising him religiously, if he’s a Christian, at any rate. Is he a Muslim?
Sorry, but whatever he is, he’s wrong. Doing things like this will seriously set back the ability of religious people to defend themselves from doing things like “marrying” persons of the same sex, a religious act which is not at all the same as repairing the car of somebody you suspect might be gay

Maybe if more spoke out then we would not be in this mess and have businesses closed, owners sued, and have them demand special rights.
No wonder we are in this mess when our side attacks a man who stands by his convictions and speaks out.
Why should a person not be able to refuse to serve anyone based on whatever criterion he decides? I’m a straight, white, Christian female. If anyone wants to refuse to serve me for any or all of those reasons, that’s his right to do so. I will simply take my business elsewhere. The government should not be able to dictate to business owners whom they can or cannot serve.
Maybe that’s why he did it. This is different than the Memories Pizza episode. This Auto Shop Owner is straight out discriminating offering any service, because of the mannerisms of the customers. The Pizza shop said they would happily serve anybody, regardless of gender, but they draw the line at being forced to support gay weddings.
This man here seems to think all he has to do is deliberately provoke the anger of gay people and instantly win the dollar backing by conservatives. This was not thought through. Even though it’s unfair, he may lose his shop before this is all over.
Nobody has had that right since the 60s, so those signs are meaningless.
I can’t support this guy’s stance (at least as outlined in this story). Unless gays are coming in and asking him to put a sign on their car that says “Support gay marriage!” or something of that ilk, there’s no reason for him not to serve them. Heck, how would he know they’re gay unless they inform him so? (Okay, yes, you can guess, but you really can’t know. Have known some swishy straight guys and burly macho gays!)

How do you tell a “HOMO” car owner from a straight one? rear end? driveshaft? radiator leakage?
I agree. This is not on the same level as being compelled to do something that is against your religion. Fixing someone’s car is not proscribed by scripture. It almost seems like something liberals would love to be able to point to and cry “bigot!”

No, it’s not. We have had both federal and state anti-discrimination laws on the books for decades that make that kind of stuff illegal.
Now, the federal laws don’t cover sexual orientation, and not all of the state laws do either. So, in that case, you might get away with making a statement like this business owner did. However, it’s simply untrue that “refusing to do business with anyone” is a right that we have anymore. Go ahead and try telling someone you won’t serve them because they are black (or white), or female (or male), and see how fast the law smacks you upside the head.
No, homosexuality can refer to both a characteristic and a behavior. Or do you think there is nothing different in the character of a person who engages in homosexual acts, versus the rest of us? Is everyone just as likely to engage in that behavior?
