Dr. Warren Weinstein, an American aid worker held hostage by al Qaeda, was accidentally killed in a U.S. counter-terrorism operation, as was an Italian hostage, Giovanni Lo Porto, and another American who was an al Qaeda leader, the White House announced on Thursday. Officials also announced that a separate operation killed Adam Gadahn, another American who became a prominent al Qaeda member.
The White House said it was unaware the four were present at the sites. President Obama was set to make a statement after 10 a.m. ET.
"The operation targeted an al-Qa'ida-associated compound, where we had no reason to believe either hostage was present, located in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan. No words can fully express our regret over this terrible tragedy," the White House said in a statement.
"The President directed that the information being shared today, which was properly classified until now, be declassified and shared with the American people. He takes full responsibility for these operations and believes it is important to provide the American people with as much information as possible about our counterterrorism operations, particularly when they take the lives of fellow citizens.
"The uniquely tragic nature of the operation that resulted in the deaths of two innocent hostages is something we will do our utmost to ensure is not repeated. To this end, although the operation was lawful and conducted consistent with our counterterrorism policies, we are conducting a thorough independent review to understand fully what happened and how we can prevent this type of tragic incident in the future."
I don’t believe anything coming from this administration.
There Are No Accidents...
Goatboy dead, finally.
Warren was not only a great teacher, professor but he was a very very good man and a good friend. I grieve for him.
If Bush had done this, the caterwauling from the Left would be deafening.
I am unsuccessfully resisting the urge to reply about Islam, boys, and goats.
I compare the death of Dr. Weinstein to that of our POWs who were killed in American bombing raids or submarine attacks during WW2.
If we fight a war in such a way as to make sure nothing like this can possibly happen, we throw away many more lives in the long run.
Thanks for the ping. Goatboy Gadahn going to meet his maker is a good thing for the world.
Looks like Gadahn finally got a reckoning.
Um, no.
An accident is when the drone malfunctions and the weapon is unintentionally fired.
But if the weapon is deliberately fired, knowing that it will likely kill anyone in it's detonation zone, that is not an accident. Not knowing who is in that killing zone is negligence.
If a cop had fired at a suspect, and missed, subsequently hitting an innocent bystander, he would almost certainly be charged with negligent homicide.
Should have fixed the spelling while you were at it. I think it’s Yemen.
it is a rather strange...”coincidence”
I wonder how many Goats Johnny Jihad’s father kept??
Me neither. Where's Gadahn's corpse?
Maybe the Friday spot is already taken with some other screw up so they squeezed this one in on a thursday.
Well you are right...
But the guy living at 1600 Pennsylvania is actually sorry the strike got such a dynamic, well-spoken muslim...
Americans — stay away from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Gaza, and other Islamic nations. If you volunteer to go to these places as an “aid worker” don’t expect the US military to rescue you when you are betrayed by the people you think you are helping and sold to ISIS , Al Qaeda or other groups that hate America and you. America should not have pay for your stupidity and lunatic altruism.
people still farm goats?
