One Political Party Increased Its Seats in the British Parliament By 800 Percent!

Posted on 05/08/2015 9:04:27 AM PDT by pinochet

The election results in Britain has given the Conservative Party a majority in the UK parliament. But the most interesting story in the election, is the events in Scotland. The Labor Party has been wiped out in Scotland. The Scottish National Party (SNP) increased their seats in the British Parliament by 833 percent, the greatest increase seen by any party in the post World War Two era.

Scotland has 59 seats in the British Parliament. The list below shows the distribution of Scottish UK Parliament seats from the 2010 election to the 2015 election.

2010 - Labor (41), Liberal Democrats (11), SNP (6), and Conservative (1)

2015 - Labor (1), Liberal Democrats (1), SNP (56), and Conservative (1)

The results are amazing. The Labor Party had 41 seats out of 59. They lost 40 and were left with 1 seat. The SNP had 6 seats out of 59. They gained an unbelievable 50 seats, to end up with 56 out of 59 seats.

Could an American third party have this level of success at a national or regional level?

SNP is more leftist than labour.

Conservatives did not gain much at all. The big difference is that labour lost 56 seats to the ultra left SNP.

Exactly how conservative are the British “Conservatives?”

Correct. The SNP is socialist despite its name.

And with the Tories being virtually indistinguishable from Labour and/or the LibDems, who actually “won”?

With David Cameron bragging about being a “liberal Conservative” and the Tories being the biggest cause of legalized gay marriage in the UK, the name “Conservative” is quite the misnomer.

There is virtually no difference between David Cameron and Tony Blair.

No. This is entirely an artifact of the independence referendum, which went down to defeat last year. I hope the new Parliament majority thinks seriously about some kind of federal system soon; the SNP crazies could make a lot of trouble for the UK.

For the EU though, the sweeping Tory win is a political earthquake.

Britons are tired of being bossed around by Brussels. And if there is no change, the UK may well leave the EU before the decade is over.

My Scottish friends tell me SNP is sort of “social-democrat” not particularly leftist - but do have the belief in ideas like “their” oil should pay for all kinds of welfare programs. Not particularly pro immigration, as that doesn’t fit with their overall nationalist view.

I don’t know what to believe about SNP

Certainly its a HUGE groundswell that would wipe Labor out of Scotland in one election.

Certainly - expect another referendum on further devolution or outright independence very soon.

“the UK may well leave the EU before the decade is over.”

... and Scotland may make another run at leaving the UK.

My impression of Scotland is that it's just another International Aid Recipient State waiting to happen. The only thing thet seem to be able to think of to do with "their" oil money is to convert it over into the Scottish equivalent of EBT payments.

Leftists are not stupid. When there was a chance that the parliament could vote to allow Scotland to separate from England, and that Scotland would be on its own to pay for its own welfare state, then the good leftist citizens of Scotland voted Labor.

Now that the fear of Scottish independence is over, the leftists can now safely vote for the SNP.

It's as simple as that. They get leftists who know how to where kilts, and now know not to try and go their separate way.

Reminds me of the Parti Quebecois back in the 1970s. After persecuting English-speakers for a while, , however, Quebec seems to have returned to the fold 40 years later. The English language doesn’t seem so bad now that everyone’s on the Internet.

Scotland being in opposition is of scant consequence because Scots are governed in Glasgow by their own elected Parliament.

The only region of the UK not to have a regional legislature is England.

What’s the point if the SNP is for EU Membership for Scotland? What kind of independence is that?

Because Canada has bent over backwards to keep them in the fold, Quebec got a pretty sweet deal out of it. Most Canadians probably would be just fine with letting Quebec go.

It's all pretty confusing to me....but if they already have their own Parliament why then does Britain object so to Scotland being Independent?
