Students at Bangor Area High School in Pennsylvania were encouraged by the schools Gay-Straight Alliance to wear rainbow-colored T-shirts on Friday of last week in support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues.
Instead, two students wore Chick-fil-A T-shirts. Suspensions followed on Monday. But those who were suspended may surprise you:
[The school] suspended a group of students for using Twitter during school hours to call out two students wearing Chick-fil-A shirts during a Gay-Straight Alliance event, parents and students said.
The suspended students felt the T-shirts were offensive because of widely publicized comments the fast food companys president and CEO, Dan Cathy, made in 2012 against gay marriage. The two students were part of a televised broadcast of the schools daily announcements. Offended students took to Twitter to express their thoughts, with the tweets against the two students continuing over the weekend.
One student tweeted to another who had criticized one of the students who wore the shirts:
Youre expressing your feelings Why cant he? The response:
Being an offensive [expletive] is not expressing your feelings. One of the suspended students tweeted:
Shout-out to the [expletive] in the Chik-fil-A shirts. The mother of the that suspended student weighed in with her opinion as well:
You want to encourage everyone to be their own person, and for someone to decide its OK for those two students to go on a morning show and wear a shirt like that with no repercussions, what is the school saying? That its OK? Perhaps the school was saying those students had every right, under the First Amendment, to wear the shirts?
Now the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania is investigating the suspensions, calling them a pretty harsh punishment.
So, who was right and who was wrong here? The students who wore the Chick-fil-A T-shirts? The students who harassed them throughout the weekend? Bangor Area High School for suspending the harassers?
Let us know what you think.
Its a way to get kids ready for the sexual desires of the teachers and school boards.
Immediately after high school a bunch of my more troublesome classmates ran afoul of law enforcement and landed in prison. Now if they hadn’t been allowed to run amok (for years) and screw up everyone else’s education, they probably would have avoided becoming guests of the state.
insanity.
“Je suis Chik-fil-A”
Moi aussi...

60% of America is clinically insane.
Right behind you. I’m down to showering once a week and shaving every three days or when I feel like it, which ever comes first.
The butt print in my desk chair has become permanent.
To say one side can have their view but the other can’t because it is labeled hate is why hate speech is really about suppressing debate.
Democrats already say Republicans hate women, hate minorities, hate the poor. They say hate speech should be suppressed. Give it a little more momentum with “hate speech laws”, and the Republican party is illegal.
lol
Good kids!
Why are students allowed to were anything but plain shirts and blouses? Schools are not free speech zones. No student has a right to say anything so why not tell them all to shut up and listen? If, after 12 years of edukayshun, they have something to say they can speak.
Once again there seems to be real confusion over the so called right to “freedom of speech”.
The first day of January through the last day of December.
Bravo. Free Republic, like Drudge, is always interesting. Many times I have failed to do the dishes and get to bed early simply because the next comment on FR is exactly right, such as yours.
Delicate little flowers they are! :-) ( In my best Yoda accent.)
That's a bold faced media lie. He said he supported traditional family structures (SP)
and nothing about being against Gay Marriage.
I think the harasser were wrong. Free speech... Bangor Area Regional is near where my parents were from. Nice area...
