Sen. Cruz: Trade Promotion Authority Creates a Path for Prosperity

We must engage the global economy to ignite growth and opportunity at home

May 22, 2015 | 202-228-7561

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), today released the following statement regarding legislation to establish trade promotion authority:

"The American middle class is getting crushed by the Obama economy," said Sen. Cruz. "Middle class incomes are stagnating, and the labor force participation rate has not been this low since the Carter Administration. While I have serious concerns about the all-too-typical Washington backroom deals that enabled this bill to get to the floor, I could not in good conscience vote against a bill whose most significant impacts will be jobs, growth, and opportunity for struggling American families.

"By passing Trade Promotion Authority, we create a path for trade agreements to reduce government-created barriers to prosperity. More economic growth will expand opportunity to those working to climb the economic ladder and achieve the American Dream.

"This bill increases the transparency of trade deals considered under its rules. It requires the public posting of the full text of any such agreement for at least 60 days before Congress begins consideration and reaffirms that Congress gets the final say. It would enable both this President and the next to expand trade that benefits American workers.

"This legislation ensures the United States will not be stuck on the sidelines as China aggressively pushes the 19 trade agreements it currently has under construction. It sends a message to the world that the United States will play an active role in writing the rules that will govern international trade this century. The cost to peace and prosperity of doing otherwise is too great to let this opportunity pass."

I read it....it still doesn’t make sense to hand Obama a victory, on a bill that was kept secret no less!

Got another Dr. Suess story Ted?

***************

Sure- “If I Ran the Zoo.”

Sen. Cruz could dedicate it to many of this thread. The main character posits that if only He ran the zoo, how much better the zoo would be.

Well, then, enjoy your fit and throw Cruz in the trash.

I’m beginning to think we deserve to lose.

People voted in Sen Cruz, so the concentration of power in DC could be curbed.

This is not wise.

The explanation does not address the issue. Instead we the people get the grandiose notion of “FREE” prosperity blah blah blah.

Not good.

Cruz is there in the thick of the senate and has a damn good reason for what he does. I refuse to throw him under the bus like many are doing on this thread. So, dump on him and stay home on election day. You people against Cruz have no sense.

"Another NAFTA, "

Of course it is. Mexico has gotten too expensive, so they need to find cheaper labor. I suppose we should all be grateful others are willing to work as cheaply as the Chinese.

“All of the folks throwing tantrums and yelling, “I’m done with Cruz!” were, I suspect, just waiting for an opportunity for him to do something they didn’t agree with. It’s just so satisfying when we realize no politician is perfect, and we will never agree with anyone, much less an elected official, 100% of the time.”

You’re smarter than that.

I would have happily voted for Ted Cruz. I’ve noted that several times in the past. I was also an early contributor to his campaign. I don’t relish being played for a fool. But I have been. It doesn’t happen often.

As much as the truth burns, it is the truth: Ted Cruz sold us out. He also sold out the middle class and gave dear leader the means to jam both gun control and amnesty down our throats. Ted Cruz is neither stupid nor unaware. He understood the implications. This was pure calculus on his part. He figured voters in general and conservatives in particular were too stupid to figure it out. He might well be proven correct.

I hope he enjoys his 30 pieces of silver.

“I bet this too....2016 the Democrats will win the White House.”

It would appear that we won’t be able to tell the difference.

I’m sorry Ted I’m just not buying it. This is an unacceptable explanation on its face. Talking about transparency when you probably have not even been allowed to read the bill is just deceptive.

Jeff Sessions who has been a senator waaaay longer than Ted Cruz says this bill is a monstrosity. I have to take Sessions word on this one.

I am very troubled by Cruz’s Iran bill vote and now this trade mess. At this point I am just going to sit back and wait to see if Trump decides to run. I think we need a mature adult in the Whitehouse for a change. Too bad we can’t get Jeff Sesssions to run.

The truth is actually worse than that. Ted Cruz is neither stupid nor unaware. He knew exactly what the implications were of this and chose to go along to get along.

I hope he enjoys those 30 pieces of silver.

What is wrong with considering Scott Walker or Rand Paul? Scott Walker is an unknown about protecting US workers, and Rand Paul has been really solid about his displeasure with the Patriot Act and spying on US citizens and on not passing laws like this trade bill that will undermine US workers and strengthen Obama. Then there's Donald Trump to consider. Love him or hate him, he tells it like it is!

Why are you so hung up on assuming Ted Cruz is the best choice, so early in the game?

Lost my vote Cruz! This is pure bovine droppings or I did not read the bill I just voted for it. America is in big trouble and its time for the adults to come forward and leave the children at the side of the road. If we want more stupid just leave captain Oreo in office and kiss your ass goodbye.

If I was stupid, which I'm not, I'd think this tread was the result of trolls who wanted to head-fake us into making the same stupid mistake 3 times in a row, by dividing and conquering us. Even they couldn't be that stupid to think we'd be that stupid, could they?

Oh, the exquisite drama.

Your girlfriend didn't get caught messing around on you...an elected official simply did something you don't agree with. And despite the fact that he's the best candidate by far, you're all ready to dump him.

Enjoy your butthurt. And don't complain when we end up with Jeb.

Walker is untrustworthy because of his flip-flops. If I absolutely had to, I could vote for him. But Cruz is preferable, by far.

Rand Paul? Really? Why, because he voted against this bill? Paul is pro-amnesty and doesn’t give a rip about queer marriage. So, no.

No matter how early in the race it is, it’s obvious Cruz is the best choice.

Check out the video posted yesterday of some idiot accusing him of homophobia. He didn’t miss a beat...he turned it right around on the guy, asked him if he had a problem with Christians.

There isn’t a single other candidate who would respond that way. All of them-—Bush, Walker, Paul, etc.-—would have given a stammering, appeasing response and gushed over their willingness to attend a queer wedding.

If Cruz doesn’t stand out to you by now, you haven’t been paying attention.

Yeah, like making tit-for-tat vote deals that come due. How do you think the thick of the Senate works?

He's still the one to vote for. But this is a reminder to drop the shiny-eyed crap about him. He's a politician, and the entirety of the Constitution is designed to protect us from people in his profession.

And he just voted on a secret trade deal that empowers Obama. So wake up, y'all. Politicians not only kiss babies - they also steal their candy.
