A man walking to work while concentrating on his smartphone showed why one shouldn’t walk while concentrating on their smartphone because you never know what you might run into—like a snake, for instance.

Tim Malone, a DJ at OK Skateland in Chickasha, Oklahoma, learned this lesson the hard way, as surveillance video from inside OK Skateland showed:

If it were a snake, it would have bit him.

Oh wait...it was a snake and it did bite him.

...showed why one shouldn’t walk while concentrating on their smartphone ever, ever, ever, ever take one's eyes off the ground ever, ever again.

There, corrected it.

Awful lot of stupidity when it comes to cell phones. Hard to find a driver not on one, folks walking anywhere without there face buried in one, going out to eat and folks around tables with their heads down in the damn things or talking loud as hell on them.

Hey, if he’d been holding a Bible, he could have simply claimed he was starting a new cult.

Cell phones are freeing us from the prison that is direct communication.

To be fair, I’ve been hiking and in some cases where I’m looking at an old map I’ve almost walked into old wells or in one case, a black bear.

It's like a national hysteria. I do not have a smart phone and only use my cell phone a few times a month.

My wife and I were in Branson last week, and we stopped to eat at a fifties-style restaurant. We began talking and remarking that so far we hadn't seen anyone playing with their smart phones. In walked a mother who looked to be in her mid to late forties and her two teen daughters.

Not only did the teens immediately whip out their smart phones upon sitting in their booth and start the hocus pocus, their mother did the same thing. So my wife and I, who were sitting directly across from them, started laughing (which we tried to stifle.) Which did not disturb the enraptured trio across from us one bit.

What is so captivating about a smart phone that people must fiddle with it constantly?

The article makes an excellent point: before there were smart phones, no one in history had ever stepped on an unnoticed snake.

He could have done some barefoot firewalking and never been singed since he was so absorbed in his smartphone.

The infernal things are like crack cocaine for many...an electronic pacifier that they can’t or won’t let go of for fear they might miss some all important update on their FB page.

I see so called “professionals” walking across busy parking lots looking only at their phones...

Stupidity combined with insanity...is that possible?

You ask “What is so captivating about a smart phone that people must fiddle with it constantly?”

It’s the same captivation that used to be offered by cigarettes. Probably just as addictive, too.

I came across a black bear while running on trails at a resort. They make so much noise crashing through the trees. Was that one not moving? Glad you saw it on time!

Hard to say, but I’ve become addicted. I don’t use it away from home if I’m with other people, though. Yet. I use it mostly to go on FreeRepublic. Maybe that’s the actual addiction?
