An ancient seal unearthed in northern Israel may depict a woman playing a musical instrument during a sacred marriage rite between a king and a goddess. The mysterious seal, which decorates a shard of a 5,000-year-old clay storage vessel, could be the oldest known depiction of a musical performance in Israel, archaeologists say.

"This is when most of the cultic impressions from Israel depict dancing figures or the feasting scene in which the female and male figures are shown facing each other, in the rite just before their sexual encounter," the researchers said.

The scene shows three women, one of whom is seated and is playing a lyre, an ancient musical instrument that resembles a harp.

Sorry, but I just don't see it.

The drawings accompanying this photo make more sense but it is highly “stylized” and hard to see. Once you get the drawing style you can see the scene.

I don’t either, but there is the chance some of these graphics appear on finds of a much later date.

They may be able to read more into what they are seeing than you and I can based on that.

What I see there is way too sparse to come to any conclusion.

Of course I haven’t had any training in this type of graphics either. They likely have.

To #3. Third star from the left.

Actually, deadcenter, bottom, woman facing left with the bow in front of her across three strings. Might be the ancient Israelis’ prototype string player to Lita Ford.

Swaying fronds of Papyrus, I can imagine, three longhaired lady lyricists, I cannot. Not in this scene anyway.
Someome is overthinking this, just to become the authority.

I see someone sitting at a harp or some sort of stringed instrument. Very cool.

I can see the three women. It’s just a head with dominant eyes.

The link shows some other samples of the same kind of art. It's somewhat abstract—semi-cartoony, in a way—but recognizable.

Someome is overthinking this, just to become the authority.

There's probably more archaeology going on in the Middle East than anywhere else in the world. I suspect there is no shortage of authorities already.

The scene does NOT show three women. The person in the center is Brian Williams.

“Sorry, but I just don’t see it.”

If you had tenure and a grant at some ivy league university, you would.
