Americans' Acceptance of Sexual Immorality Growing, Gallup Finds

Americans' acceptance of sexual immorality is growing, according to a Gallup report.

When asked about the moral acceptability of a range of issues, five of the top six issues that saw an increase in acceptability were related to sexual morality.

The largest increase in moral acceptability from 2001 to 2015 was for homosexual relations, which increased 23 percentage points, from 40 to 63 percent. That was followed by having a baby outside of marriage (45 to 61 percent), heterosexual sex outside of marriage (53 to 68 percent), divorce (59 to 71 percent) and polygamy (7 to 16 percent).

Also in the top six for increase in moral acceptability was medical research using stem cells from human embryos, which increased 12 percentage points, from 52 to 64 percent.

Views on the moral acceptability of abortion did not change. From 2001 to 2015 the percentage of those saying abortion is morally acceptable went from 42 to 45 percent, which is within the poll's plus or minus 4 percentage point margin of error.

Only two issues that were asked about saw a decrease in moral acceptability. The death penalty went from 63 to 60 percent (within the margin of error) and medical testing on animals went from 65 to 56 percent.

Another recent poll found support for same-sex marriage at an all time high for Gallup. Sixty percent said same-sex marriages should be legally recognized while 37 percent were opposed.

We’ve reached a tipping point as younger Americans hit adulthood.

And I use that term loosely.

But what will we tip to? A new forced social order? Social chaos? Despotism? Religious revival? Question is also after we have tipped, what about life will have meaning? Wealth or the struggle for money? Self-actualization and gratification? Or maybe nothing?

Amorality is the so-called “new morality”.

I know it’s off subject, but good tagline.

Perhaps a mixture of all of the above for different groups of people.

One thing I know as I approach 53 as a tail end baby boomer, I have never seen so many “lost” younger people. No social skills, head buried in an Iphone and no interest in learning anything.

Before anybody jumps down my throat for broad brushing, I will say 98% are exactly as I described above.

As a bleeding edge Boomer, I agree with your assessment completely.

I keep reading how many Millineals are not having all the shop around sex their parents did, certainly not as much as their grandparents the notorious Boomers. I read how this younger generation, now faced with a poor job market, has become more frugal and has begun to save their money for an apartment or whatever. I hear that teen girls today are far less likely to have a baby out of wedlock compared to recent past generations. So not all the trends are negative.

More evidence, as if any were needed, that America is dead.

Judging from several of the numbers, it is obvious that there are lots of Hypocrites in America.

Well, it appears that being bombarded by sitcoms with the requisite character mix and thinly veiled 'situations', more dreck from Hollywood, designed the same way, oodles of knocked up at 12 shows (okay, 16, but who knows what they'll have next season), and a wide assortment of agenda items and plot lines designed to make you feel the way the media want you to, the bar really has been astoundingly resistant to movement since 2001.

Yes, that is 14 years of battering people with social programming via every available outlet, be it media, the schools, economic ploys, music, movies, spin, spin, spin, and they haven't won the entire crop of kids coming of age over that time period.

Don't think they haven't given it their best shot, and the shrill voices proclaiming everything from transgender rights for toddlers to marrying a herd of goats are beginning to sound more and more off-key.

The mega-wave of propaganda (let's call it what it is--and it is incredibly pervasive, from the pulpit to the schools to movie theaters and teevee) has been for acceptance of unnatural relations between members of the same sex.

While the numbers look distressing, this has been 14 years (nearly a ghetto generation) of high profile full-court press with their agenda.

In 14 years of similar intensity, I'd bet you could get Eskimos to hock their kayaks to buy ice.

While the measure of propaganda effectiveness (a poll) seems to be a win for the other side, it should encourage the rest of us all the more to hold fast, and make sure our kids do too.

You may be right. Think how many young people live at home, who would have been in a college dorm or in their own apartment. You just can’t be quite the skank you would otherwise be if you are living under mom and dad’s roof, I think.

We were warned almost 20 years ago by Judge Bork in his book “Slouching toward Gomorrah”.

I think you are right, because when you meet a young person who is not as you describe it makes an impression...because it is uncommon.

I'm a few years younger than you and I look back on growing up without cell phones, social media and 24-hour tv as an advantage. I know that there is life outside of those things, but I am not sure today's younger people know that.

I think my adult life would have been completely different in many aspects, if I had remained living at the family home and going to a local college vs out of state. Ces’t la vie.
