Charges have been filed against the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, which is accused of failing to protect children, Ramsey County Attorney John Choi announced Friday.
Choi said the charges are in relation to three victims of former priest Curtis Wehmeyer.
Six charges have been filed, all of which are gross misdemeanors. They include three counts of Contributing to Need for Protection or Services and three counts of Contributing to Status as Juvenile Petty Offender or Delinquency.
Because the charges are against a corporation rather than individuals, Choi said no one is looking at jail time; if convicted, the archdiocese faces up to $3,000 in fines on each charge.
Choi said the charges are part of a 20-month-long investigation involving more than 50 witnesses and 170,000 pages of documents.

many of the stories (sorry)
I absolutely hate this—!
As a practicing Catholic, it breaks my heart .I wish there were some better ways to vet these men when they are at the seminary ...

So they charge a corporation. No individuals are held accountable. No jail time, just fines.
No problem. The parishioners will pay the fines.
If parishioners leave their children alone with clergy, staff, Sunday School teachers, etc then they are just plain stupid. Churches should also have strict rules about this as well. As far back as I can remember EVERY church I have attended had those rules and they were DRILLED in us. Even our pastors had enough common sense to make sure another adult was present. Good grief, my daughter babysat for our pastor and his wife always picked her up and took her home.
The Catholic church let this happen and their followers just went along. Irresponsible and negligent on both ends.
I seem to remember when this crisis first broke that one of the things the Catholic hierarchy was going to do was to try and rectify this abomination at the seminary level.
Look, it's no secret that Catholic seminaries are (were?) a breeding ground for homosexual perverts so whether any actions were taken remains a moot point. One of the sad things is that now the Boy Scouts are about to make the selfsame mistake-homosexual men can not be put in charge of young boys or teens-as shown by the Catholic Church pedophile disaster.
A lot of the followers didn’t just “go along” with it; they believed hollow reassurances that the men involved would be removed from ministry, and wanted to prevent scandal for the Church (while that may sound silly today, decades ago when these crimes were occurring it was still an important issue to many believers). In fact, many of these stories were broken when parents that had received those assurances later found out that the child rapist in question had simply been reassigned elsewhere.
The Church, like the state itself, was slow to realize 1) that there is no cure for these criminals and 2) that such criminals look for work that gives them access to children. FWIW, I have no problem with executing anyone involved in reassigning known offenders who later raped again.
Me too. And I’m not Catholic.
Sue those rich Catholic diocese....get that money....the fact that it was something that probably didn’t happen 30 years ago seems to mean nothing....pathetic.
Nonsense...it happened less in the Catholic church than in protestant denominations...the difference is you sue the archdiocese of Minneapolis or main street Lutheran church......see the difference???????$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Our parish requires any adult who will come in contact with the kids to take an approved course on proper behavior.....I worked in the juvenile detention system for many years and they are adamant in their protection of the kids.....some of the courses are for CYA purposes, of course, but there was a zero tolerance policy concerning abuse.
I was in a male detention facility and all of the abuse situations that I ever was aware of were female on male....nurses, teachers, counselors, officers, going after the gorgeous young men, all of which they could view in the nude at shower and bed time......Had I been female, I could have certainly seen their temptation!!!!!
Our staff and teachers all had to take a course as well PLUS a background check.
Open doors for Sunday School. Yes, CYA but that’s a good thing.
o/t back years ago we had this odd, very quiet, solitary man attend our church. Did not socialize and kept to himself. Out of curiosity, I asked our pastor about him. Turns out he was an ex-communicated pastor/priest. Never found out why but I assumed it was for improper behavior with children. I got that vibe because of what my pastor DIDN’T say. After a while he stopped coming and I never asked about his departure. Never knew what denomination either. Still wonder about him....
Maybe a lot of us should stop contributing to the Church and instead put a note in the envelope stating the reason why we won’t contribute again until they clean up their act .
