Nice big fish, the meat on a halibut that size is pretty grainy but there are lots of recipes. Most definitely a female since males only get to around 60 lbs. My best on sport gear is around 150 lbs, commercial-wise my brother and I boated 11,000 lbs. back in 1982 during a three day opener south of Juneau. We were paid 2-3 dollars a pound back then. The prices today are ridiculous.

Reminds me of two anglers who got mad at each other and got into a “fish fight”!

Yes. When I was about 8, I caught a 24 inch (don’t know weight) northern pike at a tiny lake in central Michigan (Holland Lake, north of Sheridan). I caught it “trolling” with a bamboo cane pole and a bobber. It was all the talk at the lake for a few days. My grandparents had a summer cottage there. Great childhood memories, our time there.

Do 70 pound halibut taste better than 333 pounders?
Absolutely. Filet mignon as compared to pot roast. Just my opinion after commercial and sport fishing and cooking them multiple ways over 25 years living in Alaska. Both are good eating, don't get me wrong.

After that joke you need a class in “angler management”!

I’ve lived in Juneau since 1997. I’ve seen some photos of 400+ pound halibuts pulled out of the waters around here. They can get amazingly huge.

Few times I’ve been around that tack
So i’m not just talkin’ like that smack
‘Cause I am the HALIBUT girl
I am the HALIBUT girl

Just a few changes.

I caught a 756 lb Warsaw grouper that looked about that same size. Why would an over-grown flounder like they had weigh so much less.

Down here in Port Arthur up until the 50s rich tourists used to come down to land 200-400# Tarpon. Guess they overfished them, you really never hear about Tarpon at all anymore.

The flesh can suffer on the really huge ones, but for the most part, it doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.

Sometimes they will get infested with Hagfish, though, and when pulled out of the water, they are basically gelatinous just waiting for a place to fall apart.

Woman (Switching the radio off) Liberal rubbish. Klaus ...What do you want with your jugged fish?
Man Halibut.
Woman The jugged fish is halibut.
Man Well, what fish have you got that isn’t jugged?
Woman Rabbit.
Man What? Rabbit fish?
Woman Yes. It’s got fins.
Man Is it dead?
Woman Well, it was coughing up blood last night.
Man All right I’ll have the dead unjugged rabbit fish.
CAPTION: ‘ONE DEAD UNJUGGED RABBIT FISH LATER’
Man Well that was really horrible.
Woman You’re always complaining.
Man What’s for afters?
Woman Well there’s rat cake ... rat sorbet ... rat pudding ... or strawberry tart.
Man Strawberry tart?!
Woman Well, it’s got some rat in it.
Man How much?
Woman Three (rather a lot really).
Man ... well, I’ll have a slice without so much rat in it.

Because the average grouper that length would have a lot more volume than a halibut that length.

Same with tuna or other fish. Halibut just don’t get all that thick, even at huge sizes.
