TAOS, N.M. -- Searchers have found the body of a former White House chef who had been missing for more than a week after going hiking in the New Mexico mountains, authorities said.
The body of 61-year-old Walter Scheib was found Sunday night near a hiking trail in mountains in the Taos area, the New Mexico State Police said.
"The body was discovered off the immediate trail," a State Patrol statement said.
Authorities did not provide a cause of death or any other details about the discovery, saying rescuers were still gathering information and more details would be released later.
Scheib was White House chef for 11 years under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and recently moved from Florida to Taos.
He reportedly went for a hike June 13 in the mountains near the Taos Ski Valley. His girlfriend reported him missing the next day.

Two small holes in the forehead?
Wow, that’s a great looking photo.
I want to go there now!
I always envisioned New Mexico as a dry, arid wasteland devoid of trees, and full of New Mexicans.
Google Valles Caldera, 100 square miles of nobody. One of the prettiest places in the state.
If we let you in, Texan...
Yes, ...don’t bother hiking in the Pecos Wilderness... ( ; )
When Colonel Chuck Yeager introduced one of his commanding officers, General Irving “Twig” Branch, to the Sierra Nevada populations of golden trout, Branch ordered Yeager and Bud Anderson to introduce the species to the mountain streams of New Mexico.[20] However, the New Mexico populations have also died out.[19](Cal. Neat story from “The Right Stuff” I believe...
un-official trout seeding from U.S. helicopter...upside down in a lake in N.Mex... Heh, Heh, Heh. No one died...
But I believe that Gen. Branch didn’t live long enough to retire to N.Mex. Too bad.
and don’t ever camp near Lake Katherine or Truchas Lake unless you want to be very near to God...when the Lightning/Thunder Storms come. Read Psalms...it helps !
Lake Katherine was given its name by theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer[4]

I will not litter, and will leave nothing but footsteps.
I am dirty hippy in that way...
Come on in, and be sure to enjoy some green chile.
Elk Central
I love that part of the world
Except for Taos it’s still like the 60s when I was a kid
Taos Ski Valley put me in the hospital in Santa Fe in 79
It’s purty steep
How the heck did the buffalo get inside the cave? Is there a concession stand like at Carlsbad Cavern where the buffalo was trying to get an ice cream ...and you rudely butted in line ahead of her? Just asking.
>I elk hunted with a bow in the Chama area as well as the Gila Wilderness. Easy to get turned around in the Gila but still beautiful in its own way.
>The Gila was like being in an enchanted world, there was frost on everything when we went out in the morning and as the sun came up everything with frost started steaming and we started sheding our outer coats. We were on horseback and covered a lot of ground and I got some nice Elk just like the Indians did it, with a compound bow, oh, guess they didn’t have compounds. But I did feel kinda like they would prolly felt , doing it with a bow.LOL
They have elk, mule deer and bears today, not sure about the buffalo.
A bear could have gotten him, they would known that right away. Could have been struck by lightning. I would not want to hike alone.
RIP.
I wonder if they will release a cause of death?
There was a thunderstorm that afternoon, with 25 mph winds and temps in the 40s. If he wasn't prepared and got soaked, hypothermia could have gotten him, too.
After the autopsy, presumably. The Taos Ski Valley is very high altitude (between 9,200-10,350 feet), I’ve been there. Going for even a short walk is very taxing. I wonder if he even had time to acclimate to the altitude, which can take about a week.
Yeah ...like a gazillion black diamond russ...... got busted up there many a time. Always came back though.
Thanks for the ping!
Arkincide.
