TAOS, N.M. – A former White House chef for Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush drowned in a New Mexico mountain stream, and his death was ruled an accident, authorities said Tuesday.
The determination followed several days of mystery about the death of Walter Scheib, who vanished during a solo hike in the mountains of northern New Mexico and was found dead Sunday night after a weeklong search. There was no sign of foul play, State Police Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo said. Scheib recently moved from Florida to Taos. He was 61.
Scheib's girlfriend reported him missing after he failed to return from a June 13 hike in the mountains near the Taos Ski Valley. Three days later, Taos police found Scheib's vehicle at the Yerba Canyon trailhead. The 4-mile trail follows a canyon bottom before climbing to 3,700 feet in elevation.
As the search progressed, state police exhausted all resources, from the National Guard to the U.S. Air Force. High mountain peaks, deep canyons and dense vegetation made the air search difficult, while the rough terrain hampered efforts on the ground.
Thunderstorms stalled the air search last Thursday, but ground crews continued. That evening, data from Scheib's cellphone helped to pinpoint his last location, and the search was expanded.

Not necessesarily. iPhones have a feature you can enable that will show the last known location of the phone before it died. This is so if you lose it, there is a record of where it was before the power ran out.
Also, given his connections, it might have been the NSA, which keeps tabs on all of us for their own nefarious purposes, that provided the info.
Then again, it could be just an increase in the Clinton body count.

Deserts often have hard packed soil and dry creek beds. Water can’t soak in as fast as it falls in a downpour, and there is no time to scramble out of the way before the water overtakes you. There is a creek bed prone to flash floods near my house in town, and it has claimed lives in the time I have lived here.
If you are ever in Denver, the aquarium has a flash flood simulator. A wall of glass protects you. It is still frightening.
Additionally, I don’t know what kind of clothes he was wearing, but if you get your jeans soaked and it gets cold as it does in deserts and in mountains, and you can die of hypothermia very quickly. One of the symptoms of hypothermia is feeling hot and people have been known to get into cold water even as they freeze. Some even strip naked.
We lost a lady locally last month here in Colorado to hypothermia, and last summer I read that as of August, 46 people had died while hiking, skiing, backpacking, etc.
This guy didn’t tell anyone where he was going. Not smart. It doesn’t take too many strikes before you’re out in the West.

Also the article says that he was located by the last known location from his phone. These days it would be surprising if someone's phone was not continuously broadcasting their GPS coordinates.
