African-Americans were deeply involved in the American Revolution from Day One, as the death of Crispus Attucks during the Boston Massacre in 1770 illustrates.

Yes, the Brits did promise freedom to blacks who served them, and some blacks did, just as many white loyalists also served the Brits.
But the far larger number -- about 9,000 total, or 20% of the northern Continental Army -- served the American cause.
Indeed, some historians say that freed blacks enlisted in larger percentages than white Americans.

"In December 1775, Washington wrote a letter to Colonel Henry Lee... stating that success in the war would come to whatever side could arm the blacks the fastest...

"At the Siege of Yorktown in 1781, Baron Closen, a German officer in the French Royal Deux-Ponts Regiment, estimated the American army to be about one quarter black.[9]"

These African-Americans served in integrated units, the last time that would happen until President Truman again desegregated the military in 1948.
