Jeb Bush may have made his first notable gaffe of the 2016 presidential campaign, declaring in an interview that Americans need to work longer hours for substantial economic growth to return.
The Republican presidential candidate was conducting a recorded interview with New Hampshires The Union-Leader and was answering a question about his tax plan, which he used as an opportunity to state his goals for economic growth.
My aspiration for the country and I believe we can achieve it, is 4 percent growth as far as the eye can see, Bush said. Which means we have to be a lot more productive, workforce participation has to rise from its all-time modern lows. It means that people need to work longer hours and, through their productivity, gain more income for their families. Thats the only way were going to get out of this rut that were in.
According to OECD data, U.S. workers average 1789 hours of work per year, above the global average for developed countries. Among those with full-time jobs the average work week is 47 hours, according to polling by Gallup, while for part-time workers the average is about 26 hours per week.
Democrats immediately attacked, arguing that Bush was callously calling for more to be squeezed out of hard-working Americans. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) released a statement to The Associated Press saying the choice of words was easily one of the most out-of-touch comments weve heard so far this cycle. A follow-up tweet punched home the narrative that Bush was suggesting American workers were lazy and needed to work harder:

Jeb made his comment while he was on vacation this week in Maine!
I agree. In itself it is not a bad statement.
In the old days, before unions, people expected to work 6 days a week, sometimes well into evening.
It’s probably part of how America got so far ahead. To wit, most Euro cultures have a “siesta” principle where everyone is expected to leave work for an hour or more, and even early. Once I realized that, I realized what a difference our culture made from that with hard work, like it or not.
“Jeb Bush ... that Americans need to work longer hours for substantial economic growth to return.”
Call me Boxer.
Jeb Bush has no clue regarding our economy. Our economy sucks because of the rampant socialism. With his statement he agrees with the democrats that the policies are fine. He actually believes, along with democrats, is that all we need are more Boxers.
What is really needed, is roll back of all regulations and taxes on corporations and people. Then watch the economy take off and grow.
I think the language I would be inclined to use in describing the anatomically impossible acts that I think Jeb should perform on himself would be unacceptable, not the sentiment.
Getting rid of job-killing Obamacare would be a first step
To which his wife added "Si no tienen pan, que coman pasteles ".
Yes. But the only time he ever worked up a sweat was playing tennis at Andover.
That asshole has always depended on Daddy’s money or Brown Brother’s Harriman money and has never worked a day in his life. What does he know about working for a living.
But my boss would only allow it if I worked for free.
Bush should keep his mouth closed for more hours.
Just how much more do you think they should SLAVE?
WORK MORE HOURS???? IDIOT....you are an embarrassment to humanity.......
How about yous telling those WELFARE QUEENS & PRINCES to get off their ass and help the Economy, YOU IDIOT how dare you make such a comment.
BUT, I will bet that the Welfare Queens & Princes and Illegals in the gimedat programs will say YEAH Jeb, you tell em..........grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I found work in Carters presidency easier to find than now.
This economy stinks on ice!
Praise the Lord I am working again, but at 1/2 pay with a 1/10 of the benefits.
And it was a bitch to find.
Sit down Jeb, before you hurt yourself.
Sit down Jeb, before you hurt yourself.
