Ghostwrites, dubious consultants and falsified applications are being used by many of the Chinese students who apply to enroll at U.S. universities, according to a new CNN report. A 21-year-old woman from Jiangsu Province told the publication how her parents paid three consultants $4,500 to fill out the application, write her personal essay and compose teacher recommendation letters. The reason: Her level of English wasnt strong enough. I did feel slightly guilty but all my friends did the same thing, the woman said.

My experience is that Universities LOVE foreign students willing to pay higher out of state tuitions.
I’m surprised that they actually have to resort to cheating. Wouldn’t affirmative action and diversity concerning college admissions be enough to let them in concerning race issues as opposed to having really good marks like the privileged white would need?
Except that is a paradox for their love of Mexicans who get a free ride basically.
UC Irvine is something like 70% Asian people.
My son and his friend took the SAT’s 2 years ago next to two non-English speaking Chinese students. They completely bagged the English portion and cheated through the whole Math section by swapping answers.
My son’s friend spoke Chinese and told my son what they were doing.
Yes, but I don’t think that’s a pervasive attitude throughout the country. Foreign ‘paying’ students are a valuable commodity.
The realization dawns that the number of folks in the so-called elite(s) who are not complete frauds is...vanishing.
Leads to an increasingly skeptical view of things as one ages.
How many American students can write their own papers?
Yes and they’ll reject in staters to make room for internationals. In staters basically told to go to community college now and then transfer.

Oh yes. Most certainly.
Not sure if Chinese students benefit from AA since Asian Americans are overrepresented at many good schools already.
Anyone who believes transcripts from Chinese schools is a fool.
The problem is, Big Education is one of the most, if not the most, corrupt industries / institutions in this country.....and that’s before you factor in this new tidbit.
This is only to get into elite universities.
The average university will gladly take all cash payers who apply.
Try 39%, as of 2010 stats. About the same as whites and Latinos combined.
“My experience is that Universities LOVE foreign students willing to pay higher out of state tuitions.”
This is the simple fact. The thought that today’s universities have ANY standards whatsoever when it comes to someone willing to pay is ludicrous.
Universities today do not care about anything except money - who will pay and how much and minimizing money “left on the table” when it comes to the shell game of tuition/room and board/fees.
Chinese students are perfect for todays university. They pay a premium, and since they are asian, you don’t have to cater to them like other minorities and pretend that they are special.
It might be comforting to some to think that cheating is the reason they’re successful. Don’t kid yourself...they work their a** off.
Cheating on applications isn’t just at the college level. I teach high school science, and some of my incoming foreign students have much lower English proficiency than expected based on their applications. Our admin is changing its screening procedures for foreign applicants to include a Skype interview to verify English proficiency. Cheating doesn’t stop once they get into their desired school either. I have a lot of problems with certain of my foreign students cheating on tests and assignments, demanding extra time and test re-takes, etc. Their classmates sometimes complain that the foreign students who ‘don’t understand’ in the classroom understand and speak very well in social situations. Social language is admittedly simpler than academic language, but I suspect there is merit to their complaints.
In most cases my foreign students have indeed been hard workers. Some have also boosted their hard work with cheating. They're not mutually exclusive.
