The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has unanimously approved a resolution to end the organisation's ban on gay adults working as leaders.
The group's National Executive Board will meet to ratify the resolution on 27 July, the Boy Scouts said in a statement.
It is a major step towards ending a policy that has caused deep rifts in the group, which was set up in 1910.
The BSA voted to end a ban on allowing open gay boys to become scouts in 2013.
Earlier this year, former US defence secretary Robert Gates, who is BSA president, told the group's national meeting that the ban on gay adults needed to end, saying it was no longer sustainable.

As the mother of a proud Eagle Scout (2009) I sadly hope and pray that BSA will disband under the weight of their liability and perversion. This is sickening.

We need to sweep the Supreme Court clean and install four new (and young!) strict constructionist justices so that the Court will be neutralized for thirty plus years. Then we need the Court to revisit their most divisive and legally questionable decisions of the past two generations.
We need to repeal Obamacare and not just keep it from growing while we have the White House. While we're at it, we need to reduce the rest of FedGov's involvement in paying for medical care.
We need to completely repeal the National Firearms Acts of 1934 and 1938, the Gun Control act of 1968, and all other federal laws that infringe on our God-given individual right to keep and bear arms.
We need to drastically shrink other parts of FedGov, including eliminating the Department of Commerce, the Department of Education, and ... um ... I forgot the third one. Well, let's just cut most of EPA, most of Energy, most of Health and Human Services, and all of Labor until I think of that other one.
Do it all in the first hundred days of 2017, so that it's old news by the next election and so there will be a track record showing the sky didn't fall. Let's make socialist advances temporary so we can make freedom permanent.

My God, once upon a time I thought I would never see this happen. The Boy Scouts are no longer an organization Christian organizations can promote and fund.
I just thought of something. I wonder if this cave is because they have been threatened the loss of tax exempt status.
If their troop leader IS gay but not "out", then how is that any different than it is now?
The bigger danger to the continued existence of the BNA is the failure of good men to step up as leaders and churches or other organizations to support them financially.
