A recruiter at the Armed Forces Recruiting Center in Gainesville brought a gun inside the center Friday and accidentally shot himself in the leg, police said.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the unidentified recruiter brought the gun to the Dawsonville Highway center. Soldiers are not allowed to bring weapons inside the center, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“Given recent incidents in Chattanooga we know the public may be concerned about the police presence, there is no need for public alarm, this was an accidental shooting,” Gainesville police said in a statement on the department’s Facebook page.

The recruiter was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center after the incident, which occurred about 11 a.m., according to Channel 2. His condition was not known.

I am sure this was one reason why they decided against having every military arm themselves. I think it would be good to have security in every recruiting office for awhile but for every military personnel to have their own weapon? First of all it would take a long time to coordinate that and is that the right way to deal with this?

Interesting discussion to say the least.

It wouldn’t hurt to allow those with state carry permits to have them inside the recruitment offices.

Does anyone get training anymore or are they spending more time in sensitivity seminars than on the range?

A gun of any kind is a tool, not a toy. Learn how to use it properly and disavow yourself of any notion that its neat or fun.

Riddle me this batman: how the hell does a trained soldier accidentally shoot himself? Especially with his own weapon? Idiot.

I agree so we are going to get 1 million military personnel up to safety levels by today? Not realistic at all. That is why they are not doing it. The logistics would be a nightmare too.

One time in Basic Training and then it depends on job and what you are doing. I would imagine half would have to be completely retrained and I am being generous with that percentage.

Well, they could take the armed guards from the Social Security Offices and send them to the recruiting stations for awhile.

The Social Security employees would still have the bulletproof glass.

The same Social Security who were investigating Tea party personnel.......And military personnel for the most part as a whole is conservative.......they would all be dead probably by the Social Security personnel.

Well.....that is why I said it may have been a pocket gun..They are notorious for discharging while in a pocket with say.....a set of keys in it...

Just a guess..

I have a .25 auto that I frequently carry when in the woods or working under a house..[snakes..etc]

But I learned very quickly to put it in my boot, or in my back pocket. The safety has a nasty habit of turning it’s self off to the fire position.

i don’t know about training now but when i was in in the late ‘70s there wasn’t a lot of small arms training, especially handguns.

Gun grabbers: “We told you so”.

This kind of thing doesn’t help at all.

I know. It would not be so bad had it happened next year or something but less then 24 hours is sorta embarrassing. Some are saying Dishonorable Discharge but I think he will get a slap on the wrist because he can always say he feared for his life and today that would work.....I think.

But all Marines are well aware of weapons safety and how to treat firearms (regardless of size or caliber).

If the duty officer at the recruiting station had been armed they could have stopped the douche bag. At least one person at every military post should be armed. I can’t believe we are discussing whether soldiers are competent to carry weapons. UFB.

Not disagreeing but SFC Manolito taught me this lesson in 1964 and I still adhere to it.

Well I suppose if you think this is some conspiracy then perhaps you have a point. I however believe it to be a true story. I can’t imagine you finding this story fictional when we have over a million military personnel and you don’t think 1 person would fear for his life after yesterday and bring a gun to work. Interesting life you lead I must say.
