Trump Goes Mushy, Incoherent on Immigration (gee, who coulda seen this?)
Breitbart ^ | 7-30-15 | Ben Shapiro

Has Donald Trump made his first serious boo-boo of the campaign?

For weeks, the media have trumpeted the supposed death of the Trump campaign. First, they claimed, Trump’s campaign imploded on launch thanks to his comments about illegal immigration. Then they claimed that Trump was finished because of his slap at Senator Sen. John McCain (R-AZ)43% ’s (R-AZ) war service. But neither of those comments alienated Trump’s base – he’s maintained his seven point lead over Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in the 2016 presidential polls, with no other candidate breaking double-digits in the polls. In fact, his original comments about illegal immigration launched his candidacy to prominence, with many Americans relieved that a major candidate had finally touched the media third rail and talked openly about illegal immigrant criminality.

Now, however, Trump may have damaged himself with the very people excited by his candidacy. Asked point blank about his immigration policy, Trump dropped the brashness and the blurting, and suddenly went completely Hillary-vague on CNN. After blathering about deporting criminal illegal immigrants – even President Obama pays lip service to this idea – Trump continued:

Spoke with my daughter today and asked her what she thought of Trump (she's of voting age and remembered how I LOVED RR).

She said not really much, that he was loud and a braggart. I asked her why she thought he was popular with many people and she said that she thought because of some things he said about illegals and all.

I mentioned the so-called "need for immigration 'reform'" and she said she guessed that it might solve some of our problems but that Reagan probably made matters worse when he didn't build the fence.

I told her that if Congress refused to enforce and support their own law (Simpson/Massoli) in 1986, when they manuvered Reagan into giving some 3M illegals amnesty, why would they do any different now? I also mentioned that Congress claimed that there were 1.3M illegal aliens in '86, when, in fact it was more than 3M, don't you think that if the government is claiming there are some 11+M now, you can probably triple that number and that in '86, not all 3+M illegals came forward to get amnesty because they didn't want to pay taxes and managed to "live in the shadows" since then. I told her that people who break the law, have no problem with breaking other laws.

I told her that illegals either worked off the books with cash under the table from employers that loved the idea, or they worked with false IDs, which for me or her would be a felony but not for illegal aliens, at least not under the proposed "Immigration Reform" law!

I'm assuming that anyone of the bunch running for President, who declared their intent to enforce the Simpson/Massoli law and explained what it entailed, that candidate would sail to the head of the pack!

If he builds an Israeli-style border fence, We can compromise on the rest. That is the EXISTENTIAL threat. Only if we STOP the flow completely can we save this nation.

Whatis it said about mental illness. ..

Do the same thing over and over again hoping for a different outcome. The epitome of the Republican party and their lifetime politicians on this issue for at least the last 35 years.

My memory says Cruz will increase the numbers of H1B visas by something like 5 or 6 times. Someone tell me if I’m wrong.

I’m counting myself in the Cruz column, but I’m not happy about this. I want illegal immigration stopped cold, and I want legal immigration reduced until the *real* unemployment rate is down near zero.

Almost none of the candidates, including ones I like, seem to get it. So I’ll have to settle for someone who at least wants to deal with illegal immigration.

Better yet, make the penalty for employing an illegal alien so severe that employers won’t take the chance. Deport them when they come to the welfare office.

I don't like Cruz's H1B visas increase but at least it isn't this Trump shell game amnesty.

We need to also close the welfare magnet but Trump is boldly opening up discussion on illegal immigration which will allow others who are serious about stopping illegal immigration to get their proposals in as well. Hope Tom Tancredo gets in on the act. We miss you Tom.

I was liking Trump when he was the bold color against a background of pale pastels. But now it appears he is fading and watering down his message so that he sounds like the others.

George Soros, Warren Buffett, Peter Lewis, Bill Gates are billionaire commies...

Are you a billionaire? Trump is and he didn’t get there by being shallow

After a dozen of his companies went bankrupt we can see how he got there, he made sure he was always a minority partner but with his name on the buildings, little risk but all the attention.

Plus his donations to politicians (to get things done) show he is a crony capitalist of the highest order, which is why he supported Kelo.

and anyone who thinks Bill Clinton was the greatest President and donated $100K to the Clinton Foundation has some screws loose.

That FReepers like a lot of what Trump’s said isn’t surprising. He’s designed to push the buttons of the issues that a demographic of FReepers will react to: brashness in taking on the establishment, illegal immigration, and liking Sarah Palin fit the motif. That’s his job this go round.

That FReepers take Trump seriously as a candidate is an embarrassment to conservatism.

.I am, however, enjoying my personal vindication, at least to a degree.

Personal vindication for what? Let me guess ... in order to understand why this personally vindicates you, you have to be one of the "greater minds", that you speak of (and, which you include yourself in the list of). Hashtag credibility dropping to nothing.

"What is wrong with attrition thru enforcement? We don’t need mass deportation or a blanket amnesty or paying them to leave. We just make life miserable for them including shutting down the job magnet."

That's one strategy, but...

  1. The cost of enforcement. You're going to have a black market in labor as long as they are here. So you're going to have to have investigations, prosecutions, court hearings, and then you still have to deport them. Paying them $x is one way to get them to self-deport without a lot of enforcement action.
  2. The black market in labor has a corrupting influence on the market. If your competitor is using cheaper illegal labor and the enforcement is not fast or sufficient to deter them, then you're out of business, unless you do likewise.
  3. To get the cash, they have to submit to having biometric data taken, making it easier to identify them if they enter the country illegally again.
  4. Severe penalties for re-entering the country is more palatable if they received a cash payment for exiting.
  5. Self-deportation reduces their numbers quickly, making protests less likely and less volatile. So that when you do have to get tougher on deportation, it's a little easier.
  6. A quick cash payment may incent some of the sponges and criminal element to self deport. Hopefully they'll underestimate how much harder it will be to get back in, and go for the quick cash.
  7. Making life miserable for them is not going to set well with everyone. If you're not careful, you'll put them out of a job and into the food stamp line. Or you'll see an increase in crime.

Just curious why are you suddenly concerned with our borders and this invasion? Your posting history seems to indicate you had little concern about this invasion prior to Trump running.

Did you say this?

Until we secure the border, it doesn’t make a damned bit of difference what else we say we are in favor of or not.
