Wisconsin homeschoolers now can play on public school teams

Homeschoolers in Wisconsin will soon be able to participate in public school sports, thanks to a new measure recently signed into law by Governor Scott Walker.

Previously, homeschooled students in Wisconsin were not allowed to play on public school sports teams. But Scott Woodruff of the Home School Legal Defense Association says the new law allows them to try out for teams at public schools.

“I think for many folks who were initially opposed to it, it was almost kind of a turf issue,” he says. “People thought, Okay, homeschool students might be part of our community, but they don’t attend this public school, so they can’t be on the team even though their parents fund the program through their tax dollars."

He says Governor Walker did veto a small section of the bill prohibiting school districts from being members of athletic associations that do not require member districts to comply with the law. That veto led to some confusion about what the law actually says.

“The necessary part of the bill was in paragraph A, where it says that a school board shall permit a homeschooled student to participate in sports,” the attorney explains. “So the part the governor vetoed was nonessential, but a couple of organizations misunderstood his veto and publicly said homeschoolers can’t play sports, which of course is wrong, and that created a lot of confusion.”

Wisconsin is now the 31st state to allow homeschoolers to play on public school teams.

That’s quite the straw man you are attempting to construct in multiple posts.

Then get out of those parents’ wallets. See how this works?

Yeah, I'm not responsible for the tax codes or structures.

See how that works?

Fact is a few homeschoolers want to avail themselves of athletic
programs while expressing disdain for the associated schools.

Well, if they are so much better than everyone else, they can fire up their own teams.

What seems to be the hold up? Where are those homeschool teams?

The word will come down from the teacher's union that none of the home schoolers make it through the first cut.

Your argument is slim to non-existent.

Wrong, Jackass.

People that hate McDonald's should not demand Big Macs.
People that hate local schools should not demand to be on the football team.

Our Florida schools have tons of homeschoolers. They are usually standouts for not only their athletic ability but their behavior. Oh and their parents are usually the first to volunteer and help do the work.

I simply meant that you get the benefit of your stock rising in value. You also get the opposite if it tanks. Of course you don’t get the bennies the CEO gets. You don’t get the ones the school superintendent gets, either.

Right, until the first time a home-schooled kid runs the fastest 40 ever at the school and they try to take him away from the coach!

Well.. if they are just too good for school then they are too good for the football team.

So go make your own whiny little petunia football league.

He wouldn't be "at the school".

He would be at home with his mommy because he CRIED when someone tried to put him in with normal kids.

Jeez, Gunner, who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?

What happened? Did one of your grandkids get beaten out of a starting position by a homeschooler?

Sorry.. it just seems retarded to cry about hating something
and then demanding to be a part of that same something.

I've seen what "normal" looks like these days and I am profoundly not impressed. Moreover, the athletic programs of a school are not related to the education provided.

I'm willing to bet you know zero or very few homeschooled kids to make them out as abnormal crybabies. There's a reason this topic rages you out - curious to know why.

I don’t know where you live, but in Wisconsin, children who attend private school are allowed to ride the school bus with the public school children, and certain text books are paid for for private school kids. I think that they are also allowed to participate in scientific labs, etc. This law pertains to HOME schooled children, putting them on an wqual basis with private school children.

Who I do or do not know is irrelevant.
My point is that disdaining the school but demanding to be a part of its athletic program is hypocritical.

If you hate the school, stay out.

I think HG knew a homeschooler once who had a blog...

It is quite possible to have huge issues with certain aspects of the public school and still see value in the sports programs. To think otherwise is to fail logic 101.

Using emotional words like cry, hate, and other things is simply a way to cast a negative light on homeschoolers. This isn’t the first thread HG has cluttered up with his irrational thoughts regarding.

I wonder what the correlation is to homeschoolers wanting their son to play for the football team and the team’s success. “No son, you can’t play for the football team. The school is a den of iniquity filled with people who worship Satan, but worst of all, the team sucks.”
