Ben Carson: No apologies for 1992 fetal tissue research
Washington Post ^ | 8/13/15 | David Weigel

Ben Carson defended the use of fetal tissue for medical research Thursday, after a blog published excerpts of a 1992 paper describing work the neurosurgeon-turned-presidential candidate carried out using aborted fetuses. In an interview with the Washington Post, Carson called the revelation "desperate," and ignorant of the way medical research was carried out.

"You have to look at the intent," Carson said before beginning a campaign swing through New Hampshire. "To willfully ignore evidence that you have for some ideological reason is wrong. If you’re killing babies and taking the tissue, that’s a very different thing than taking a dead specimen and keeping a record of it."

Carson, who has risen in primary polls since last week's debate, is among the Republicans who've condemned Planned Parenthood after undercover videos revealed executives in the organization coldly discussing the extraction and distribution of tissue from aborted fetuses. In a July interview on Fox News, after the first videos broke, Carson said that there was “nothing that can’t be done without fetal tissue" and that babies aborted at 17 weeks were clearly human beings.

That inspired Dr. Jen Gunter to excavate a 1992 paper, co-authored by Carson, in which doctors described how they applied "human choroid plexus ependyma and nasal mucosa from two fetuses aborted in the ninth and 17th week of gestation." That, wrote Gunter, was quite the contrast from Carson's 2015 denunciation of fetal tissue research.

Asked if fetal tissue research should be banned, or if it was immoral, Carson said no.

Believe it or not, women do miscarry in hospital and women do carry dead fetuses that then have to be delivered in hospital.

yes and see my above post: researchers do not want those specimens. they are unhealthy otherwise they wouldn’t have miscarred in the first place.

Oh I believe it. So what percentage of those miscarriages allow the fetus to be used for research, and what percentage of fetuses used in research come from miscarriages.

You can quibble about this all you wish. The fact is that the tissue Dr. Carson used in his research almost certainly was the product of an abortion. And given his current positions that is very hypocritical of him.

This is sure to knock Dr. Carson off some of the purists’ lists. Because the only person we can possibly support is someone who absolutely follows the party line down to the gnat’s eyelash, right?

And this is how the GOPe knocks conservatives out of the race. They broadcast some tidbit they know will turn the purists then bury any explanation by the attacked.

Dr. Carson doesn't need notes, he speaks from the heart and he is 100% pro-life. The best spokesman the right could have for pro-life as he talks about saving babies in the womb instead of killing them.

ON one hand he says fetal tissue research is not needed then refuses support measure to stop it?

Eh that don’t sell in anyone’s playbook

Yup, and this mindset is exactly why today babies are considered a commodity to be bought and sold.

A nice man out of his depth. They got him and they will twist the knife until he quits and condemns the Donald for having been born.

You must know that if you are not a Democrat, black and off the plantation, and offer conservative solutions that every stone will be turned to insure you are an example to those on the plantation what can happen.

I agree his moral argument is weak and he is hypocritical. My husband is a neonatologist who has done medical research ( none on fetal tissue) and confirms that researchers are generally not able to use specimens from spontaneous abortions ( i.e. miscarriages)

I donated an aborted baby for scientific research purposes. It was a miscarriage at about 13 weeks gestation. It was not a willful abortion. At the time, my thoughts were limited to staying alive myself and that maybe someone could figure out what went wrong in order to help someone else in the future. I had never thought about the possibilities of cutting up a baby and selling the parts to multiple research groups.

Miscarriages happen at all stages for varying reasons. Sometimes we don’t know the reason, but we might be able to learn the reason by studying the miscarried babies. The meaning of stillbirth varies from state to state, I think.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. I have never experienced a miscarriage and therefore can only imagine the pain.

I am sure these PP videos are heartwrenching to you. You are in my thoughts and prayers. No matter what happened to the body of your little one, I am certain he or she is a peace in Heaven with our Lord.

There are some that are miscarried that are perfectly normal. These occur due to problems with the mother. I know someone who lost three near the end of the first trimester because she had a weak cervix. She did go on to have three that lived because as soon as she found out she was pregnant the doctor would stitch up her cervix and she would go on strict bed rest. I know someone else who lost a baby when her water broke in the first trimester, and another that almost lost twins because she was simply too small to carry them. She had strict bed rest for four months but still delivered a month early. The twins were a bit small but otherwise fine.
