At Bloomberg, Sahil Kapur explains that Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) 96% disagrees with Donald Trump about legal immigration:
Though Cruzs get-tough attitude on illegal immigration certainly matches Trumps, the two men differ vastly on policies involving legal immigration. While the real estate moguls plan calls for a swath of protectionist measures to curb legal immigration, Cruz has championed anexpansion of legal immigration, arguing it would help the economy.
During the 2013 immigration debate, the Texas senator proposed an amendment to the comprehensive gang of eight Senate bill that he boasted would dramatically increas[e] the annual limit on H-1B skilled guest worker visas from65,000 to 325,000a five-fold expansion. ...............

Excellent reply.
Covers and buries the bs thesis of this oped!
Are you serious? We have the lowest labor participation rates in 38 years. The native born are seeing decreased employment across all age groups. We have a surplus of labor and we don't need more legal immigration. We bring in 1.1 million LEGAL PERMANENT IMMIGRANTS A YEAR and 640,000 guest workers annually. They are taking American jobs and depressing wages.
Walker has not been in the lead. If he had been, he would be on top of the polls. Trump put immigration front and center in his campaign. Walker has been too timid. Now he is being forced to be the “Me Too” candidate. I guess George Will’s wife has had too much influence in his campaign. Will is a big amnesty supporter.
That is one if my two reasons for backing Trump over Cruz (the other is electability). 1 million+ legal immigrants every year is insane. That is more than the 1907 peak at Ellis Island, when the cities desperately needed new immigrants. With massive unemployment, entitlement overloads and coming wave of automation, America does not need and cannot support more legal immigrants.
>> Yet his family bgrnd indicates he’s only 1/3 latino <<
One-third? I believe that’s mathematically impossible. But if you can persuade me otherwise, please have at it.
Right....
: )
Lol
How do Trump’s tweets (post #2) square with this?
They're both following Sessions' lead, as is most everyone who is suddenly seeing the light on this issue (and maybe finally listening to the American citizens instead of Big Donors).
Cruz’s mother has two nationalities-—one from each parent.
Scott Walker was talking about this back in April - 3 months before he announced his presidential run in mid-July.
Part of Trump plan is to increase wages of foreign workers and make companies look for citizen workers already here that are qualified before hiring the visa holders.
Thank you for pointing that out. I did not know about Walker.
Nice try
Something Rick Santorum said this morning caught my eye as well.
He said we need 1 million immigrants per year then went on to whine that Ted Cruz wants to increase the number by 500% which ends up being less than half of what Santorum said we need.
While I’m not thrilled with the Ted Cruz increase in H1b visas I do know that he ties it to enforcement of existing laws requiring that Americans be hired first. Another issue that nobody talks about is how many degree holders our colleges produce who are unprepared for the workplace. (Too much socializing and not enough learning)
That said, I’m not going to beat up on any of the arguable conservatives in the race. My primary concern is still taking out Bush.
10 to 30 million illegal workers.
Stick that in any of your charts.
The Baby Boom actually happened. I know.
Which is exactly what Ted Cruz has said about H1b visa holders. Hire Americans first and pay H1b holders the same as Americans.
A fact that is conveniently cast aside by the anti-Cruz hair burners.
Walker is being forced to come out of the closet on the immigration issue. I doubt he will be as forthright and bold as Trump who has put out the most detailed plan about immigration. Santorum is the only one to have done something similar. So where is the Walker position paper on immigration? Give me a link.
Sessions has leading on immigration and amnesty issues since at least 2006. Walker was for amnesty only a few months ago.
How the Republicans handled TPA was my final straw. The GOPe is worse than Dems at this point. Cruz has been “playing the game” to some degree, while throwing red meat to his base on the side. Even if you are a true conservative, you’ve had to walk a tightrope if you hold office in this political climate. Trump has drawn a line in the sand that every Republican, whether candidate or not, has to address. We are all watching them now. I hope Cruz fully comes around. But I still remember his wife’s recent statement that every person up on the debate stage with him, he would consider for a cabinet position in a Cruz administration. I think it was a very telling slip of the tongue.
