When clerks say, “Happy Holiday” to me, I always respond back with “Merry Christmas”, and often I get a “Merry Christmas” back. Sometimes I even detect a sense of relief when they say the forbidden greeting back to me. But I like your suggestion and am going to use it. If they say Hanukkah, I can sincerely wish them a Happy Hanukkah. But if they say Kwanzaa, I can't go that far. Actually, so few Blacks celebrate it that odds are slim that I would encounter that.

Years ago my daughter’s then mother in law came to our Christmas party. It was a Christmas party!! Everyone including our Jewish friends were saying Merry Christmas and she would not say anything but happy holidays. I just gave her a big hug and told her Merry Christmas. The following spring we went over there for Easter. She was all about eggs and bunnies. I took my granddaughter aside, age 5, and reminded her that it was all about Jesus who had died on Good Friday and rose from the dead on Easter. She was amazed.
