The South Carolina Republican Party is joining the push to tie Donald Trumps hands.
The state party announced on Tuesday that for presidential candidates to qualify for the South Carolina primary, they must pledge to support the Republican presidential nominee and not run as a third-party candidate in the general election.
The move comes as two other state parties, North Carolina and Virginia, ponder similar loyalty pledges. Its an offensive that is implicitly aimed at Trump, who has repeatedly refused to rule out a third-party run.
It comes amid mounting frustration in Republican establishment circles over Trumps candidacy. Despite coming under a hail of criticism in recent weeks, Trump has gained strength in the contest, holding steady atop state and national polls.
To qualify for the South Carolina primary a critical early-state contest that has traditionally played a key role in shaping the Republican nomination battle Republican candidates are being asked to sign a pledge saying they hereby affirm that they generally believe in and intend to support the nominees and platform of the Republican Party in the November 8, 2016 general election.

“This is ridiculous. The Constitution was created by people that had disdain for political parties. Wondering how this is legal.”
The Washington Post just posted a story today about that very topic....
if I was Trump I’d make the pledge while all the time winking. Then say “I’m running as a republican conservative. Pledges don’t mean a damn thing to those people so why should they think they mean anything to me.”
Or announce he’s running third party and get it over with.
bkmk
> I concur except you need to say yuge mistake.;-)
I musta missed something. Who says it like that?
Of course, I could have just sad HUGH and SERIES mistake.
:)
What about Bernie on the Indy ticket, this can be fun
Thanks for that. IOW as it’s the party, and not the Constitutional political process they can, however Trump could simply ignore, and go independent anyway. As usual the system makes lying necessary.
I’m with the Founders on the business of political parties, but whatcha gonna do?
Trump says “yuge”
I don’t trust that they won’t pay off the delegates to vote against him - even if he wins the primaries. I sure don’t trust them.
All this will do is give Trump the excuse he needs to go their party and deliver the election to the Democrats.
that will make the GOPe rue the day they didnt play fair.
I like to think a whole buncha Unipartiers have committed high jinx at Trump properties.... all captured on video. Imagine you’re John Boehner and you get an envelope in your IN box, already opened, of you in a compromised position.
I will tell you one way it will backfire.
Trump and other Presidential candidates will not be the only ones
on the primary ballot.
The ballot will have current house reps, some Senators and other
local politicians.
If they single out Trump, primary voters will “Cantor” many others on
that same ballot.
Ok .... I’ll go with ERA!!! :-)
......And it will fail them big time!
And if Trump runs third party and kills the Republican party it will be THEIR fault.
Ping
Crap, and that’s what it is, crap, like this is why I hate the GOPe. Damned RINOS!
Thanks for the ping Albion.
LOL!!!!
All this will do is give Trump the excuse he needs to go their party and deliver the election to the Democrats.
Oh, there! That’s it.
(Facepalm....jeez.)
