What to Make of Trump Fans’ Remarkable Cognitive Dissonance?
National Review Online ^ | August 26,2015 | GEORGE WILL

Every sulfurous belch from the molten interior of the volcanic Trump phenomenon injures the chances of a Republican presidency. After Donald Trump finishes plastering a snarling face on conservatism, any Republican nominee will face a dauntingly steep climb to reach even the paltry numbers that doomed Mitt Romney.

It is perhaps quixotic to try to distract Trump’s supporters with facts, which their leader, who is no stickler for dignity, considers beneath him. Still, consider these:

The white percentage of the electorate has been shrinking for decades and will be about two points smaller in 2016 than in 2012. In 2008, Barack Obama became the first president

Trump could be a simian dung heap inside a sulfurous volcano and he’s STILL smell better than Hillary.

The country will be extremely fortunate if the situation you so aptly describe elects Trump.

Throughout most of history it has elected guys like Adolf Hitler.

George has a real hard on for Trump, doesn’t he?

Has he (and NRO) been bashing Cruz also?

Trump living rent-free inside ol’ four-eyes’ head. It is truly astounding that these guys a) don’t have anything else to write about, b) continue to just claim Trump supporters are either racists, stupid, or both. BTW, I have a more advanced degree than Will does.

They are also deathly afraid of any investigations into their criminal racketeering activities that would occur should Trump prevail.

If you step back for a moment and consider the magnitude of what you (accurately) wrote, and the necessity of having an effective propaganda campaign that essentially convinces people to surrender before they even fight, then it's pretty clear that the scope of this operation is quite extensive.

The takeover and destruction of the US is a planned and coordinated event. That in itself is the very definition treason.

Trump isn't my first choice, but NRO has some real balls pushing for another worthless RINO in the WH.

IMO, there is no point in a Republican President if he's a another Bush or Romney. Why even bother running someone?

George, you’ve gotta lighten up and start thinking outside of the same-ol, same-ol prescription pad.

We all know you have a favorite in this race, and it ain’t Trump. But Holy Mackerel, Sapphire, at least pry your ossified brain cells loose enough to consider other solutions to endemic problems.

These solutions will evolve after rigorous debate, so don’t expect them to be plopped down all at one time. Trump is playing the role of change agent, something your establishment stable hasn’t been able to do for the past decade.

George Will’s wife works for the Walker candidacy. Since I will not wade through his tripe, I wonder if he mentions that. He probably has visions of himself driving up to the White House on a regular basis to dine with President Walker.

George Will and NRO are no longer friends of bonafide conservatism, but they are not wrong about the cognitive dissonance being displayed by many Trump supporters.

i think the wise conservative withholds judgement on Trump until much more is known about his other policy positions and whether or not he is able to stay on message and act in a way that’s presidential during the remainder of the primary season.

it’s one thing to be pugnacious and petty when your world is only as big as NYC, but Trump has to show that he’s more than just a billionaire with a big mouth and a ready putdown for his critics.

I’ve gone from caring about what George Will might think to believing he’s the class dork-nerd trying to keep peace with the missus at home.

I laugh out loud now, every time I see his name.

His image has been greatly reduced IMHO.

You may not know where you are listed as a conservative. It does not matter as long as you are a member of the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” and a “Certified Right Wing Nut”.

I am tired of labels ... conservative, neoCon, RINO, GOPe etc.

I do know that the simple things that Republicans have promised in the past are rarely done. I do know that few Republicans promise the things that I want most. I also know zero Democrats promise anything I want and they are somewhat successful at keeping their promises to their base.

I will be happy if Trump shreds the Republican Party to pieces. I will evaluate Trump on individual issues and if I agree with a majority of those issues he will get my vote. It is a chance that I will take and that chance is evaluated against the chance of electing a professional Republican politician that won't deliver on his promises.

I have said it before here on FR by this time next summer Trump will be the de facto POTUS, having swept clean the RINO deck and standing tall against whatever train wreck the Dims can bring forth. He is close to that now, the RINO’s just haven’t caught on yet, they will need the brutal punch in the face of the primary season to come to grips with that fact. Trump even said as much the other day, he senses it and secretly so do the pundits. Joe Scarborough knows it.
