A Fading Campaign - Scott Walker’s no-good month
Weekly Standard ^ | September 7, 2015 issue | John McCormack

Posted on 08/28/2015 1:15:16 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

"...Is Walker’s dive a temporary blip or a sign of deeper problems with the candidate? The case for calm is fairly strong. There are five months and five more debates left until anyone must settle on a candidate. Trumpmania has overtaken the entire GOP field, not just Walker...[who] continues to lay the groundwork for long-term victory:..Yuval Levin,a leading conservative reformer, called “the most substantively and politically serious conservative health care reform we have yet seen from a presidential candidate.” There’s still hope for Walker that when the dust settles he’ll be the candidate left standing who can unite a fractious party.

......The theory behind a Walker candidacy is that after two terms of Barack Obama, voters are ready for a workhorse, not a showhorse....

Walker has always acknowledged he’s an ordinary guy who doesn’t give soaring speeches, but he believes that charisma is about much more than oratory. “I think there’s a certain appeal that people have for candidates who are authentic, people who have a passion for ideas and who believe in things,”...

[SNIP]

The reason Walker became a strong contender in the first place is that he did the right thing,as far as conservatives are concerned,in facing down public unions even after being swarmed by protesters and the media. The polls had turned against him,but Walker signed the collective bargaining bill anyway. Only after the reforms took effect did they become popular. As Walker himself later acknowledged, he did a poor job of explaining them. “My problem was I fixed it,then I talked about it. Most politicians spend all their time talking about it but never fix it,”....

There’s still time for Walker to turn things around and win the GOP nomination. But if he’s going to succeed,he’ll need to do a better job of explaining his agenda—and convincing voters it’s clear in his own mind.

“I think there’s a certain appeal that people have for candidates who are authentic, people who have a passion for ideas and who believe in things,”

And people talked about Sarah Palin’s word salad.

More on immigration:

As Scott Walker has stated, "going forward" no amnesty, we seal the border (using all options), enforce the laws, remove the magnets (6 months - June 2011- into his 1st term Walker was the first and only governor to revoke instate tuition for illegals, secure jobs for American citizens [legal immigration must also be adjusted down], E-verify and then look at other options. This is about more than illegal immigration, it's about national security.

March 28, 2015: “I made it clear that for me, if somebody wants to be a citizen, they need to go back to their country of origin, get in line, no preferential treatment,” Walker said. “In terms of what to do beyond that, again, that’s something we got to work with Congress on.”

People can change their minds regarding heir affiliation so did Reagan. No one is perfect including Trump, but I would take him any time hands down, over that poor excuse pretending to run the show for now.

The article is spin. Walker is no doubt a competent governor. There is a big difference between running the country and running one midwestern state. Its plain he doesn’t have what’s wanted by the electorate at this point. He’s not connecting. Hence his mediocre poll performance. I strongly doubt that he will get traction this cycle. He doesn’t have the financial resources for a long slog in any case.

He’s still a young man. He has time to get his personal house in order, get out of debt, and to refine his message and delivery for a future election.

Trump is making stuff up (about Wisconsin)

This is where Walker's problem is. I don't know if Trump is correct or not. But what the heck has Walker been waiting for? It seems he's become dependent on advisors instead of instantly speaking out before the questions about Wisconsin's economy took hold.

Walker is young. Wisconsin could use him at the helm for a few more years. The best chance we have of saving the US is someone with a lifetime of wisdom and experience in dealing with the out-of-control mess DC has become. Someone who can rally the nation. Someone who stands up to those who've gotten out of control.

I don't know if Walker is a Chamber of Commerce cheap labor guy or someone who would be a good President. Best thing that could happen now is Walker drop out of the race, dump the advisors who have hurt him, develop a positive relationship with President Trump, and show us his potential and priorities for a run in four years.

Great video and thanks for posting it. It demonstrates several things about the immigration debate:

1. The media is part of the problem. They’re Democrats with bylines.

2. These kind of ‘tear-jerker’ moves are SOP for liberals. Why didn’t anyone ask the dad if he knew he was breaking the law? Why would he jeopardize his children’s future by breaking the law? Consequences anyone?

3. Walker is a smart politician. He knows that you have to dodge these bullets and the emotionalism that they’re attached to. It’s not a fight we can win, but when leadership counts, Walker is there.

He’s still by far the best candidate out and more conservative than Cruz. I’m surprised that so many FReepers are swayed by words and not by actions.

Walker has been a very good governor, whatever problems Wisconsin-—like any state-—still has. As I have said from the beginning, the differences between Trump and him are tremendous. Trump gets “that vision thing,” and has run a national campaign based on a wide range of addressing national morale and courage. It’s a campaign run on a totally different plane.

When Walker took three different positions on the 14th Amendment and anchor babies within 48 hours, I knew that he went "consultant wobbly" and had no real understanding nor belief that anchor babies ARE NOT, NOR SHOULD THEY BE, American citizens.

When he went underground and into hiding on that issue, I lost a lot of respect for him as a person of character.

Wifey, even you have to be shaken with his squishey, linda like, performance on this issue.

Trump has been saying the state isn’t in the best of fiscal shape.

Wisconsin hasn't declared bankruptcy. Can Trump say the same?

I still like Walker but he has to start taking some real shots instead of being oh-so-polite. What he has accomplished in Wisconsin speaks volumes but he really needs to get some fires stoked - I fear he’s taking bad advice and would end up like McCain and Romney did if put on center stage against the machine of the Left - he has better credentials by far but those credentials are worthless if he isn’t willing to spill some apples off the cart.

I am visiting Wisconsin this week for an event near Sheboygan. Although earlier this summer I traveled through the state via Madison on the way to Minnesota, the roads there were not nearly as bad as I had expected. That all changed when I got on I-43 out of Milwaukee. Not too bad at first but then all of a sudden, I thought I had a flat tire on the trailer. I finally got to pull off about a mile later and all the tires were fine.

So this goes to my outsider view. I filled up leaving Florida at 2.31/gal for diesel. Filled up at a cut rate station in Sheboygan at 2.59/gal. A question to those who pay taxes in this state is do you know where your gas taxes are going?

RCP Average 8/9 - 8/25

 Donaldus Magnus 23.5%
 Scott Walker 7.3%
 Rick Perry 1.3%

Once they implode, and then plunge into the single digits, it
seems to be very difficult if not impossible to climb back up.

It's almost like a roach motel down there.

This could change, there is a long way to go.

Walker has been one of our best and most conservative governors, his resume is impressive. Unfortunately, to put your resume to use, you first have to win office. Sometimes the best resume doesn't make you the best candidate.

The idea spun by some on FR, that Walker is a RINO and Trump is a conservative is so laughable, it makes me want to throw up. I get why Trump has been our best candidate so far, he knows how to use all the media, talk over the heads of the media, puts on a great show, but he is hardly the conservative so many here are saying. He HAS talked to the issues at the heart of the base, he HAS shown all the candidates what the GOP should have been doing for the past decade, all of that has been good. He's simply not the conservative so many here are saying.

Cruz and Walker are both great conservatives, I would prefer either of them over Donald as our nominee. but unless something changes the race, unless Trump falters that may not happen.

There's a long way to go, as we all know, there is no President Giuliani.

Walker’s problem is he hasn’t decided if he is on the side of the citizens or on the side of illegal aliens and their employers. I said before he announced he had to come out strongly on the side of the citizens if he wanted to be competitive. Trump beat him to it.
Waffling on the anchor baby question hurt him.

No, Trump isn’t a conservative, but he is clearly on the side of the citizens and that is what people are responding to.
Most of the GOP is on the side of the employers of illegal aliens.

Truth be known, Walker came out first with his plan to secure the border, and it was just as good as Trump's, and better than the one by my preferred candidate.

He didn't get the message out over the heads of the media, and that's why he isn't number one.

You're right that Trump got the message out, but that doesn't mean Trump will actually do that which he has been trumpeting. Walker has shown he actually does what he says, has actual results to prove that.

I'm agreeing that Trump is the better candidate, but that doesn't mean we're not all going to regret getting on his band wagon sometime in the future.

That corporate cash is calling him so he's been wavering on illegal immigration. That leads to distrust in those who had been supporting him with a wait-and-see attitude. That trust may be hard to regain.

I praised Walker for his efforts against unions. He fought off the recall, and I admired that, still do.

I’m neutral on the rest of his governance because I’m not close enough to his state to have kept tabs on the other aspects of his time there.

As for your Trump related comments, I agree.

No. Does the fact his fortune is worth a multiple of the state’s fiscal situation right now factor in?

Impy, I’d appreciate a link to where Trump said that.

I’d like to review it, try to see what his thoughts were.

I don’t agree with it.
