Last Wednesday, my daughter Alison was brutally struck down in the prime of her life by a deranged gunman. Since then, I have stated in numerous interviews with local, national and international media that I plan to make my life's work trying to implement effective and reasonable safeguards against this happening again.
In recent years we have witnessed similar tragedies unfold on TV: the shooting of a congresswoman in Arizona, the massacre of schoolchildren in Connecticut and of churchgoers in South Carolina. We have to ask ourselves: What do we need to do to stop this insanity?
In my case, the answer is: "Whatever it takes."
I plan to devote all of my strength and resources to seeing that some good comes from this evil. I am entering this arena with open eyes. I realize the magnitude of the force that opposes sensible and reasonable safeguards on the purchase of devices that have a single purpose: to kill.

Better mental health screening would not have saved his daughter. I feel for this guy... can’t imagine losing a child like this and he is being used, but there is nothing the government could have done within the constitutional framework to stop this evil from happening. He should be asking the TV station why they don’t provide security for their news team in the field. I watched the videos and that would have stopped the attack.
I demand crazy gay black man control.
It’s more targeted and doesn’t violate the constitution.
He wasn’t mentally ill. He was an azzhole.
It was written 16 years ago, just waiting for the correct body to walk over.
She was obviously a racist who deserved what she got because she used words and phrases like “swing by” and “out in the field.” </sarcasm>
Well Mr, if you or your daughter had committed a little "gun violence" on the murdering Mexican mofo...she'd still be alive and free, and the story would never have made the news.
So before you even think about wandering around again in your socialist-utopia killing-field, you'd better spend some quality time at the range.
I feel so much for this man’s pain. I have a daughter in high school and I can’t imagine the depth of agony, depression and despair he is suffering.
I understand his need to do something pro-active to cope with what he is feeling and feel like he is doing something — anything — to find meaning in the horror that has befallen him and his family.
But that doesn’t automatically give him clear vision. He is doing the wrong thing, and being exploited by the soulless left for their own political gain.
Disgraceful.
You mean psychological testing as a prerequisite for being allowed to buy a gun?
The problem with liberals is they think human evil can be cured with more laws.
No law in the world will stop someone who wants to break it.
If someone wants to kill you, all they need are the means.
And not necessarily with a gun.
Parker is an idiot.
:: that have a single purpose: to kill. ::
Ummm, that seems to define the efforts of one Vester Flanagan, doesn’t it?
This poor “Obamabot” grieving father is lost at sea!!! He has nary a clue to the fact that POTUS, Obama fostered hate of White folks & the USA, killed his beautiful, sweet, innocent daughter!!! Pray for him!!!
This op-ed appeared earlier in the Washington Post. It is the worst sort of boilerplate, poorly fact-checked and almost certainly ghost-written, which means the anti-gun propaganda jackals approached the family immediately after the tragedy.
"we have witnessed similar tragedies unfold on TV: the shooting of a congresswoman in Arizona, the massacre of schoolchildren in Connecticut and of churchgoers in South Carolina"
Sorry but this simply isn't the case. None of the incidents references were televised. But they all involved mental illness. And the VA & CT cases, at a minimum, involved legally-acquired firearms.
It takes 10 paragraphs for Mr Parker to arrive at the actual cause of his daughter's death:
Of course we have no way of knowing whether a bill like this would have made a difference in Alisons and Adams case. We dont know if the family of shooter Vester L. Flanagan II was aware of a problem. Nor do we know whether removing firearms would have just prompted him to use something else.
Intentional or otherwise, this passage invalidates the rest of the piece as well as removes the primary justification for whatever pie-in-the-sky legislation Mr Parker might propose.
Attribution errors are the hallmark of the anti-gun left, but their worst excesses are reserved for praising legislators for 'decisive action that will prevent the next tragedy.' This is an unproven and unprovable claim, yet it's described as sensible and reasonable?
I realize I'm debating the merits of the piece when it has no merit, paternal grief notwithstanding, but I really do tire of the same old rubbish.
'Whatever it takes' is a phrase used by totalitarians, not republics.
Will he start a campaign against 3-D printers too? Tech is advancing. The people will just make their guns.
As soon as they can buy him a Congressional district, watch him wave his daughter's bloody blouse as his banner.
This tragic death is no excuse to put the rest of us at risk.
You’re just looking for the secret service to stop by, aren’t you?
Turning into a fascist won’t bring his daughter back.
Start by committing sodomite prostitutes and those pushing racial paranoia and hatred to mental institutions.
Is this the one killed by an ex male prostitute? I’m having trouble keeping these black on white killings straight.
Tell you what Andy, you want to blame someone for your daughter’s death you can go right up the line from the gay black deranged gunman (who obtained his weapon legally, btw) all the way up to the Race Baiter In Chief at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, whose divisive and hateful rhetoric have set race relations back over 50 years in our Nation, if that black maggot who killed your daughter and her cameraman had been driving a half ton truck, would you be calling for an end to ‘motor vehicle violence’?
I doubt it. So give your head a shake and use your common sense. Until then, STFU.
