Pentagon: Chinese Navy Ships Passed Through U.S. Territorial Waters for First Time
Free Beacon ^ | 9/4/15

The five Chinese Navy ships spotted operating in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska steered within 12 nautical miles of the U.S. coast and passed through U.S. territorial waters, the Pentagon said.

The Wall Street Journal reported:

Pentagon officials said for the first time late Thursday that the five Chinese navy ships had passed through U.S. territorial waters as they transited the Aleutian Islands, but said they had complied with international law. Analysts saw the passage as significant as Beijing has long objected to U.S. Navy vessels transiting its territorial waters or operating in international waters just outside.

The Chinese vessels, including three combat ships along with a replenishment vessel and an amphibious ship, were first observed in the area Wednesday after moving toward the Aleutian Islands, which are controlled partially by the U.S. and Russia.

China’s Defense Ministry explained that the ships had sailed to the Bering Sea for training following joint exercises with Russia called “Joint Sea 2015 (II)” at the end of last month, insisting that the actions were “routine.”

This is clear provocation.

I could picture Reagan putting up with this BS.

In Obama’s defense, he did have to lift a pen at the beginning of the week. I’m sure he was exhausted.

Mixed feelings on this event. Considering where and how it happened it’s really not a BFD. From the article: Pentagon officials said that the vessels passed through the U.S. territorial waters in agreement with international law’s principle of “innocent passage.” All that said, I’m disappointed the Chinese didnt make a D-Day type of amphibious landings in southern California, Oregon, and Seattle.

Passing through international waterways (the Bering Strait) that are narrow enough to encompass only territorial waters is actually one of the rights that Uncle Sam has been asserting since forever. The headline is misleading. Chinese vessels passed through US territorial waters while transiting the Bering Strait the way the 7th Fleet passes through Indonesian territorial waters while transiting the Strait of Malacca. The Chinese government claims that the US does not let foreign navies approach US territorial boundaries. This non-incident shows that they are wrong.

This is clear provocation.

The question is who provoked who FIRST ?

From article: "Analysts saw the passage as significant as Beijing has long objected to U.S. Navy vessels transiting its territorial waters or operating in international waters just outside."

I'd expect any kind of landing to take place south of the border (maybe way south), followed by a troop and supply build-up. The D-Day build-up occurred in the UK, not Boston.

Neither incident is a provocation. The right of free transit through international waterways is long-established, and Uncle Sam has spent considerable diplomatic capital keeping it up.

Precisely. The equivalent would be if the US claimed the entire Atlantic or Pacific Oceans as US territorial waters.

Landings are scheduled for next year ... as soon as the California, Oregon and Washington become completely gun free zones.

All liberal sympathizers will be rounded up as they have proven they cannot be relied on, nor trusted to support their own country. Questioning will begin within the week, and any completely unreliable elements will be dealt with on a permanent basis.
