An 11-year-old boy shoots an almost 17-year-old who had broken into his home, saving his 4-year-old sister and scaring away another burglar. The burglars repeatedly tried to break into the home, finally succeeding on their third attempt.
The mother apparently purchased the handgun because of several previous attempted break-ins of her home.
One can only imagine the relief that the mother had that her children were safe.
Yet, the reaction from police and authorities was to question why the gun was so easily accessible. Police Sargent Brian Schellman told KTVI in St. Louis: Just seems at this point that any one can pull the trigger on a weapon. Its very scary.
Missouri is a state with a so-called safe storage law, one that imposes criminal liability when a minor under 18 gains access to a negligently stored firearm.
But no one seems to ask what would have happened if the children hadnt been able to protect themselves. . . .

While I understand the officer’s concern, just what is a gun for?
It’s to confront others who could cause harm to you.
Sounds like the kid did the right thing.
Oh, well, there is that...
Cops would have preferred dead raped victims?
Makes for overtime?
If the 11 year old was educated and deemed by the mother to be mature enough to have access to the weapon, I say kudos to the kid.
The cops should volunteer to give him and his mom some pointers.....well, OTOH, maybe not....
Job security??
Possibly.
My parents gave me my first gun when I was 9.
Just curious... did the 11-year-old call the police before shooting the intruder?

Yeah, didn’t the law pull the trigger on an 11 year old at Ruby Ridge? That is truly scary.
Well yeah. Left alone with an unsecured loaded firearm. Mom and kids should be in jail. /s
I’m in the St. Louis area and I heard on the news a couple of hours ago that the 11 year old called the older kid on to the porch and then shot him. This story is still developing.
How dare someone use a firearm for self defense to save their life! We could have got some sweet OT of a murder of two kids.
The left wants to take guns from non-violent citizens while leaving them in the hands of violent criminals.
These are all valid points. But this appears not to be the whole story:

Apparently the neighbors are saying that the kid summoned the 16 year old from the street (where he was apparently trying to sell cell phones) and shot him in the head on the porch.
I thought the story of an 11 year old ending a home invasion with a single head shot seemed like “nice shooting” to say the least.
I heard reports there was also a four year old in the house. That could be a problem, don’t you think?
Just as some of us are trying to defend ‘Blue Lives’ this type of story comes out.
Geeesh.
Great idea! When seconds count, police are only minutes away.
Well Sargent, did the kid shoot at the police?
Priorities.
