Critical infrastructure operators in the U.S. continue to face a hailstorm of hacks. Federal documents obtained by USA Today through a FOIA request revealed that hackers infiltrated the Department of Energy's computer system over 150 times between 2010 and 2014. As the department overseeing the country's power grid and nuclear weapons stockpile, the Energy Department is an attractive target for overseas cyber spies seeking to uncover vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security is warning critical infrastructure providers of a malicious spear-phishing campaign in which hackers use bogus emails to infiltrate users' networks. The campaign has targeted government facilities and chemical, critical manufacturing and energy companies.

Preppers’ PING!!
Why is ANY computer that controls the power grid connected to the internet?
DOE doesn’t manage or operate the grid.
DOE has critical information on the grid. They have the ‘keys’ and the ‘maps’.
Yeesh, and ping.
Why is this article taking up valuable space and attention on FR? We have a Presidential election to discuss non-stop for THE NEXT THIRTEEN MONTHS!
I thought it was over? Didn’t Trump win?
>Why is ANY computer that controls the power grid connected to the internet?
For the “work from home” folks and external access. Lax risk factor rules.
It’s more of a intranet as opposed to a internet, but even so, operators have to access it and that access generally comes through the internet from their devices, but it’s highly encrypted....so it’s difficult to penetrate.
Sitting in the dark is going to suck. Get some kind of plug and play solar.
My Acme DeLorean Time Machine is in the shop for tire rotation, a new battery and alternator, tune-up, touch-up paint job, and to get some awful smell out of the air conditioner evaporator.
Not sure how it all comes out in November 2016.
That is a very informative book, I suggest it as well.
Is that a serious question?
And the phone companies, who control who accesses what, just roll over for this? Or do they accept bids for who gets to hack what over their bandwidth?
Prolly TOTAL BS but there are big rumors that also UA905 and UA935, both flights from the Europe to the USA were HACKED.
The rumor alleges the flights turned back and are now safe.
They allege there will be a much bigger attack soon, that one lethal.
TOTAL BS, I suspect.
Leaving BA out of the mix, are they? England must have paid the ransom.
They aren't. There are some weak points that could allow a hacker to get to the systems, but the systems themselves are far from the Intenret. With CIPv5 coming into full swing, those isolated networks are even harder for people with genuine access to administer than ever. It will be the companies that claim to follow CIPv5 and do not (i.e., they lied) or from an internal attack that will turn off some lights.
They do not have the “keys”, that is patently false.
