In a country with more than 300 million people, it is remarkable how obsessed the media have become with just one Donald Trump. What is even more remarkable is that, after six years of repeated disasters, both domestically and internationally, under a glib egomaniac in the White House, so many potential voters are turning to another glib egomaniac to be his successor.
No doubt much of the stampede of Republican voters toward Mr. Trump is based on their disgust with the Republican establishment. The fact that the next two biggest vote-getters in the polls are also complete outsiders Dr. Ben Carson and Ms. Carly Fiorina reinforces the idea that this is a protest. It is easy to understand why there would be pent-up resentments among Republican voters. But are elections held for the purpose of venting emotions? No national leader ever aroused more fervent emotions than Adolf Hitler did in the 1930s. Watch some old newsreels of German crowds delirious with joy at the sight of him. The only things at all comparable in more recent times were the ecstatic crowds that greeted Barack Obama when he burst upon the political scene in 2008. Elections, however, have far more lasting, and far more serious or even grim consequences than emotional venting. The actual track record of crowd-pleasers, whether Juan Peron in Argentina, Obama in America, or Hitler in Germany, is very sobering, if not painfully depressing.

Had I only known all I had to do was say; "Take it off and I'll burn it for you, Baby!"
Poppycock. Reagan made an emotional connection with the electorate. Fortunately, he also had strong conservative principles.
No candidate is going to make it to the White House without establishing an emotional bond with the people. Like it or not, Obama did it. Bill "I feel your pain" Clinton also did it.
People are fed up with the status quo and the impotent Republicans in Congress. Trump is getting his message out far more strongly than anyone else. That people are rallying around Trump does not mean that he is viewed as a messiah. There is a leadership vacuum in D.C., and someone is going to fill it.
You dreamer you! ;-)
LOL!
‘Bill “I feel your pain” Clinton also did it.’
Clintoon had the huge advantage of division by a major 3rd party. As this could be.
As for Uhbama, we all know why he got elected twice. It’s unPC but it’s true.
Picking the commander in chief is not the same as snorting cocaine. Drug dealer Obama is a better piece of human cocaine than most politicians, but that is no reason to vote for such a person, whether is name is Obama or Donald Trump. If a person's pronouncements and positions are wrong and he is full of braggadocio, one should be very wary of voting for him -- especially when there are better candidates around.
“If a person’s pronouncements and positions are wrong “
Do you disagree with Trumps position on illegal immigration?
bttt
No, the reference in this case is spot on. Hitler was elected in 33’...at the time very few thought he would start WW2 and blow up Europe...people just wanted to make Germany great again and many fell for his BS...sort of like you falling for Trump’s BS...like the left who fell for Obama’s BS...or the Argentinians who fell for Peron’s BS. All Sowell is suggesting is you think a little before embracing a self-promoting clown like Trump.
“people just wanted to make Germany great again”
Ah. Finally we get to the problem. You’re a self-loathing American. That’s why you object to Trump. Tell you what, just don’t vote for him in the primaries. Let others decide for themselves. You and your Boehner brown-shirts might just have to hold your nose and vote for an American this time.
Thomas Sowell has offered up some extremely insightful and reasoned work in the past. This most recent work, and some work I’d seen here over a year plus ago came nowhere near the mark I’d have expected. Frankly, they (my remembered examples) smacked of go-along, get-along gotta vote for the most electable second-most evil establishment candidate - as does the article discussed in this thread.
In that vein, when I wrote “ilk” I was thinking of Kristol, Will, Krauthammer and all the rest of the so-called conservative DC punditry elites who are all now saying the same, or worse. So much so that the cat is out of the bag now - full blown establishment RINOs that don’t want to change the status quo.
Trump will simply do what they tell him to do, just like the presidents before him. It may have nothing to do with money at all.
He WILL build the WALL. He will send illegals home and he will protect or borders.
If the satanic organized crime cabal that runs the show tells him to do it, he will. Otherwise it won't happen. If Trump doesn't know this now, he'll find out after he gets elected.
I object to Trump because he’s a narcissistic, adolescent clown...and that says a lot about you, that you see him as some sort of George Washington like figure who is going to save America.
As to the ‘self-loathing American’ statement...that just proves my point you have a serious reading/comprehension problem.
Delusion... pure delusion.
How about supply a fact or two... or a touch of logic... something...

Make up your mind.
First you say Donald Trump is “Hitler”, then you say he’s “George Washington”.
You should learn to love your country more, and then maybe, just maybe, your mom and dad will be proud of you like they were before you lost your grasp on reality.
“”If the satanic organized crime cabal that runs the show tells him to do it, he will. Otherwise it won’t happen.
So, I take it you do not vote since anyone in office is subordinate to this “cabal” you claim exists.
So, if you don’t vote, why do you care who gets in??
“Dr. Sowell is right, but it is clear that at least half the electorate is incapable on voting on anything except based on emotion.”
Perhaps it would be more convincing an article if he didn’t dismiss Trump’s supporters as “Just like Hitler’s supporters”.
Don’t you think that argument is flawed, even just a little bit? Maybe the problem is bringing in “Hitler”?
Yes, it was an exceptionally flawed analogy. Obama’s supporters as Just like Hitlers supporters would be far more accurate except for the fact that Hitler provided his adoring crowds with a higher quality of music.
