In this recent USA Today op ed, I explain how the unexpected success of Donald Trumps presidential campaign is in large part the result of widespread political ignorance:
Despite some recent stumbles in his campaign, the most dramatic development of the 2016 presidential race has been the meteoric ascent of Donald Trump to the status of front-runner for the Republican nomination. Trumps rise is a particularly blatant example of a much deeper problem at the heart of modern democracy: widespread voter ignorance.
Trumps success so far is in large part the result of an almost perfect storm of political ignorance. As a longtime celebrity, he had a built-in advantage with voters who dont know much about politics
Polls also consistently show that Trumps support comes disproportionately from those with relatively low levels of education. For instance, a recent ABC/Washington Post survey found that 40% of Republican-leaning voters without college degrees support Trump, compared with only 19% of college graduates. Low education correlates with support for Trump far more than political ideology, or any other demographic variable. Education and political knowledge are not the same thing
Nonetheless, the two are highly correlated....

Do they actually think insulting us will work???
93 million unemployed, 19 trillion in debt, betrayed by the GOPe, Obamacare shoved down our throats, a POTUS who apparently is a lover of those who want to destroy us and and kept his personal records sealed, we’re invaded by those who want those of us who have jobs to pay for them...
These self appointed geniuses are the ones who are stupid.
Wizards! Who needs them.
Like those indoctrinated into Liberal politics in college?
Most MENSA members I have been acquainted with have been low achievers and have had very poor social skills. The high point in their lives has been MENSA.
Dem perfessers from dem der colleges sure speakify reel purty.
Yeah! The Professor could make a radio out of seashells, telephones out of coconuts and a car out of palm trees ... Why didn’t he just fix the damned boat?
Is that the kind of country you want to live in. I don’t think so. You sound very low information.
That is an ironic temptation of braininess. Those who consider it even worth going for that kind of kudos might have value system imbalance, which is not the same as lack of common thinking ability.
I think that was sarcasm.
I’m actually quite the opposite of ‘politically ignorant’ as I’m sure the vast majority of us here are. I’m taking a good hard look at supporting Trump because the political class from both parties have made a disastrous mess out of my country and our Constitutional system of govt. They’ve created the NEED for a non establishment candidate like Trump by stabbing us in the back and bold faced lying to us through their teeth.
Maybe it’s high time for a Trump to come along and shake these corrupt monkey bastards out of their trees. They sure act like they’re entitled to rule over us don’t they? They need a rude awakening and revenge is a dish that’s always best served cold.
I’ll take my chances with an outsider, a non establishment type instead of the pigs at the trough that we have now. A billionaire that doesn’t need to steal our money is looking pretty good to me at this point.
I guess I’m one of the 19% of college graduates who support Trump.
Trump and Cruz are the only two Republican candidates that excite me.
That is an absolute fact.
And and interesting tidbit...
According to the U.S. Census bureau, 23.1% of Americans have college degrees.
According to studies, degree holders vote dem more often than GOP. Meaning that degree holders represent just barely over 20% of the GOP leaning population.
Trump gets, according to this article, 19% of his support from Pub leaning people with degrees.
You can break down the numbers, but all in all, they are so my trying to spin it one way, and his support actually reflects something of a snapshot of the nation and the party.
It literally a nothing story when you read past the headline.
You could just as easily write the story: Trump establishes broad based support - Trump demographics match GOP demographics within 3% points across the board.
I have a BSBa/IT, and two AA’s in missiles & munitions and aviation maintenance technology. I guess that makes me unedumacated.
GWB
In case anyone is wondering.
Most common guess I hear is JFK. It’s a good laugh.
Well I'll be damned.
I thought you had to be way higher than the 80s and 90s to qualify :)
One strong positive the Trump campaign has achieved is making us all aware of how much disdain the elite have for the rest of us.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Bathhouse Barry get the vote of 60%+ of those with less than a high school edumacation in 2012?
I believe he scored something like 99% among the prison populations, as well?
