Nine cities in states across the US have pressed for resolutions to recognize October 12 as Indigenous Peoples Day rather than Columbus Day. Eight of those cities passed resolutions in the last two months and three adopted a resolution just this week.
The City Council of Albuquerque, New Mexico voted six to three on Thursday to recognize October 12 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in a new proclamation:
“Albuquerque recognizes the occupation of New Mexico’s homelands for the building of our City and knows indigenous nations have lived upon this land since time immemorial and values the process of our society accomplished through and by American Indian thought, culture, technology.”
The proclamation noted 500 years of Indian resistance since the arrival of Christopher Columbus and marked the day “in an effort to reveal a more accurate historical record of the ‘discovery’ of the United States of America,” and to “recognize the contributions of Indigenous peoples despite enormous efforts against native nations.”

No, not that standard. The standard is that the only difference between Columbus hitting the Americas (but never actually America) and the ones who came before is what OTHER people did ENTIRELY SEPARATELY. It was a matter of timing and where he was in history. Many others put together the backing and took the risk to find America before him. There was NOT any “vaguely posited” land, Europe ALREADY KNEW as an ABSOLUTE FACT that there was another continental land mass there. He really didn’t do much cataloging, that was other explorers that came after him. And actually at the time it was NOT recognized as an incredible feat, he was just another ship captain who made the switch to land owner.
He didn’t really lead. He pulled off something that had been done before. He didn’t win. Many others did.
He didn’t discover America. That’s not Leftist, that’s actual historical fact. I do know better. And you do too, if only you’d bother to admit it.
And these same people slam “rednecks” over the head with Galileo and Voltaire. Go figure.
Read Admiral of the Ocean Sea by the Adm. Samuel Eliot Morison, USN, or listen to it on CD in the car. Many libraries have it. A renowned historian and sailor himself and a WWII admiral, he deals with all these questions very carefully and recounts the events surrounding all the voyages. He sailed the route himself and wrote the book from primary sources. Do not reply until you have. It makes sense of what is known, unknown, hinted at, or conjectured. It's a great read as well.
You’ve acknowledged every aspect of why we know for a fact that Columbus did NOT discover America. You just won’t take the last jump. We already know what is known, unknown, hinted at and conjectured, and they all add up to one easily understood concept: Columbus did not discover America, and anybody saying otherwise is quite simply lying.
You're over into crank territory. If you won't read the book or think through what it means to explore and discover, you have a problem called "Resentment Against Achievement" (the title of an emotional, but on the whole accurate book you might actually enjoy).
Right now, you're sitting in the armchair built by Columbus, occasionally bestirring yourself to bite his ankles. Get up off your butt and do some work.
If somebody hit crank territory it was the one that said “don’t reply until read X”. That’s a pure crank move. Meanwhile, reality remains reality. And reality it you acknowledged Leif was here before him, which means you know full well Columbus didn’t discover America.
Leif was a great man. Catholic, too. But you're a nut with an obsession. Sorry.
I just paid my annual property and school taxes. The Tax Collector in Columbus Township cashed the check.
There’s nothing wrong with being obsessed with reality. And reality is the only thing Lief didn’t do before Columbus with America was be followed by the English. He got here before Columbus, he explored the area before Columbus, he established colonies before Columbus, and he established intercontinental trade before Columbus. If England had been organized enough to follow him instead of Columbus nobody would have ever heard of ol’ Chris.
“One Impy abolishes Black History Month, MLKJr Day, Earth Day, Labor Day, Ramadan, and Kwanzaa.”
At least abolish Earth Day, as it is too expensive to clean up the 2 tons of garbage the Earth Day participants leave on the ground.
I’m telling you all right now...
If International Garden Slug Day goes away, it means WAR...
That’s all I have to say ‘bout that.
” Garden Slug Day”
