A monument to MLK will crown Stone Mountain
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | October 11, 2015 | Jim Galloway

On the summit of Stone Mountain, yards away from where Ku Klux Klansmen once burned giant crosses, just above and beyond the behemoth carving of three Confederate heroes, state authorities have agreed to erect a monument to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Specifically, an elevated tower — featuring a replica of the Liberty Bell — would celebrate the single line in the civil rights martyr’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech that makes reference to the 825-foot-tall hunk of granite: “Let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia.”

(snip)

Gov. Nathan Deal has green-lighted the projects, and a formal rollout is likely to come sometime before the holiday season. (A Deal initiative to place an MLK statue on the grounds of the state Capitol remains in the works, delayed by the death of the sculptor originally chosen for the job.)

Fine. But leave the Confederate sculptures unharmed.

In the late 60’s, while at Griswald Winters and Swain, we developed the master plan for the park at Stone Mountain. For the open meadow at the base of the sculpture, we provided individual landscape settings for each of the thirteen confederate states. The individual designs featured each state’s flowers and trees, along with their individual state flag.

Each landscape setting was positioned and chosen based upon the order of each state’s succession and framed so that there was no obscured view of the sculpture. This was many years ago, and was developed to show reverence for southern history: a history that should not be dismissed.

We, as a country, must stop this kind of political nonsense. When there is no respect for the past, we have no future.

Outrageous. This was plagiarized from a speech given by Black Republican Minister Archibald Carey, Jr. to the 1952 Republican National Convention. Where's the monument for Rev. Carey ?

I see it as an ‘equal time’ attempt to thwart talk of destroying the existing carving on Stone Mountain. If this becomes a trend, schools, cities, cemetaries, and military bases across the land will be adorned with a MLK monument.

The man was a liar and a thief. He stole more than 40% of his dissertation and thus stole the title of doctor.

He cheated on his wife and hired prostitutes, mainly white ones who he allegedly physically abused. Thus he didn’t deserve the title of reverend.

He was a thoroughly despicable man - but one who is held in high regard by the black community. What does that say.

and, there are virtually no black hikers

So funny you would say that. I just came back from hiking at a number of national parks and monuments. I bet I saw over 1,000 people at various sites which is a lot for this time of year. I didn't see one person who was black. What I did see were a fair number of families who were homeschoolers but not one black.

I've been to Stone Mountain, and watched a wonderful laser show.

Why don't they take this monstrosity and put it on Martin Luther King JR Boulevard, or one of the many Peachtree Streets in town.

Turn the funds over to Maynard Jackson’s decendents and it will never get built!

Is that the reason?

Ok.

What about a monument to Harriet Tubman or Booker T Washington there?

Or John Brown?

Why? He already has a "historic district."

WHy not rename the US to MLKland?

Why not?

Because you're racist?
