Donald Trump has rejected the Republican campaignsâ joint effort to negotiate the terms of the GOP debate format with the major media networks, insisting he will negotiate independently.
It is a brazenâand brilliantâmove, one that demonstrates the difference between politics-as-usual and the bold reform Trump is promising his supporters.
(One does not have to be a Trump supporterâindeed, this author has at times been a criticâto recognize that.)
ABC News released a draft list of the other campaignsâ demands. It is rather underwhelmingâa demand for petty guarantees, such as a promise that moderators will not ask the candidates to raise their hands in answer to questions. It is a list, sadly, that validates Democratsâ mockery, which had painted the Republican candidates as âwhiners.â
Trump is not just demanding changes in camera angles. He is proposing that debates no longer be the intellectual property of the mainstream mediaâthat they become âopen sourceâ content, run by political parties for the benefit of the public, and not by the mainstream media, with any proceeds of advertising donated to charitable causes.
So while the other campaigns are haggling over marginalia, Trump is bidding on an entirely different deal. He has the leverage to pull it off, because he brings the ratings to the show. But the real genius of the idea is the way he proposes to re-frame primary debates, not just improve them.
It is a pitch aimed beyond politicians, at the public.

I cannot answer that question.
I don’t believe he is in it to sell books. He’s worth $10 billion. The dollars from books would be insignificant when compared to $10 billion.
I personally believe he is wanting to make America great again. He has enough wealth and fame to last a lifetime. I am also sure he realizes the dangers of being $20 trillion in debt. Who is best suited to get us out of that mess?
What a great article!!! Thank you so much for sharing that, that really makes you proud!
This probably means that he already has a deal in place with an unnamed party. Now he’s offering the deal to others. If he pulls this off, it will demonstrate, by example, what he can do as President. At the very least it keeps him in the headlines.
Cruz attack is what set up Trump to do his thing.
Cruz set it up. Trump will nail the details.
Bingo!! That’s exactly right. Thank you for stating this in print. Most of us truly wish to leave something of pride for the next generation. Our grandparents, parents, ancestors fought and died for this country. To see how it has been squandered is deplorable.
Fixed it
Carson resembles the church Episcopalians build on the wrong side of the tracks to keep the riffraff from going to the church downtown. His purpose is to keep susceptible blacks off the Democrat plantation long enough to get them used to the idea, at which time they might be amenable to staying on the right and voting for the eventual Republican candidate.
Hehe...otherwise known as Jean-Francois Ketchup-Kerry lol !
Ha. Trump doesn’t wait for a “Blue Ribbon” commission to make
recommendations. Trump acts.
GO MR.TRUMP!
I just thought of something else...thinking ahead....I wonder how Trump is going to handle the ‘voter fraud’ that the Clintons are so famous for?
I hope you’re right.
I like him but don’t want him as president. I would only support him against hillary but I wouldn’t be excited about it.
No, I’m sorry, I meant I think Carson is in it to sell books.
Trump doesn’t need it LOL.
I heard last week that he has volunteers out getting the VA signatures and no one else does.
Mark Levin was suggesting this last week.
Trump must listen to Levin.
That is great news.
From “The Great Santini” ...
Bull Meecham don’t say. He just do.
Remember Trump has all of those killer lawyers working for him.
My response to you was about Trump in VA, not Carson.
Ditto from me.
but what charities would liberal networks choose?
