Cruz Condemns Colorado Shooting, Rejects Anti-Abortion Link

NEWTON, Iowa — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is condemning the fatal shooting of three people at a Planned Parenthood location in Colorado but also aggressively pushing back on suggestions the shooter was part of the anti-abortion movement.

Speaking reporters after a stop here Sunday afternoon, Cruz rejected a potential connection between anti-abortion activism and the shooting, instead taking issue with "some vicious rhetoric on the left blaming those who are pro-life.” The shooting, which happened Friday in Colorado Springs, left a police officer and two civilians dead, and a suspect, Robert Dear, has been taken into custody.

"The media promptly wants to blame him on the pro-life movement when at this point there’s very little evidence to indicate that," Cruz said.

When a reporter reminded Cruz it has been reported Dear made a comment about "baby parts" while being apprehended, Cruz retorted: "It’s also been reported that he was registered as an independent and a woman and transgendered leftist activist, if that’s what he is. I don’t think it’s fair to blame on the rhetoric on the left. This is a murderer.”

Asked if we could call the shooting an act of domestic terrorism — as former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has — Cruz again urged caution about drawing conclusions from the shooting at this point.

“I would call it a murder, and we’ll what the facts are," Cruz replied. "It was a multiple murder of what appears to be a deranged individual. And it was horrific, it was evil, and we’ll find out more out about the facts, but I don’t think we should jump to conclusions.”

Speaking with reporters a day earlier in Lamoni, Iowa, Cruz's remarks on the incident were less politically charged as he became the first GOP presidential candidate to denounce the shooting.

“We don’t know ... what those motives were, but whatever they were, it’s unacceptable, and it’s horrific and wrong,” the Cruz told reporters here before a town hall. "I have spent much of my adult life working in law enforcement, working against murderers and those who commit violent crime, and that one officer lost his life is particularly tragic."

Cruz appeared to be the first GOP candidate to directly address the shooting Saturday morning, when he tweeted that he was "Praying for the loved ones of those killed, those injured & first responders who bravely got the situation under control in Colorado Springs." The Democratic field reacted swiftly to the incident Friday, and President Barack Obama issued a statement Saturday morning calling for more gun control in the wake of the shooting.

Cruz has been perhaps the harshest critic of Planned Parenthood in the GOP field, especially after the release of undercover videos showing officials with the group discussing business practices. Cruz has referred to the organization as an "ongoing criminal enterprise," and he regularly promises to initiate a federal investigation into the group as one of his first acts in office if elected president.

Disclosure: Planned Parenthood was a corporate sponsor of The Texas Tribune in 2011. A complete list of Tribune donors and sponsors can be viewed here.

Yes, Trump was the first GOP candidate to visibly and vocally counterpunch the media, but I always knew Cruz had no fear of the media and was able to counterpunch just as well, especially when I saw him on megyn kelly’s premier episode, which was somewhat testy.

A great example of Cruz’s counterpunch ability is in reply 5 of this thread. It was masterful. And the msm guy who prompted it probably has no clue that Cruz demolished him. Cruz was understated yet deadly.

I would demur a little: God is the best. Ted is outspoken about believing, and tends to believe at a typical fundamentalist church level, which is certainly a helpful thing on the scene. This does not equate to Ted being perfect (the bible already rules this out) or even the most important carrier of God, which may remain to be shown.

Let’s keep watching for what God works. And let’s not be surprised if it turns out to be something that neither Cruz, nor Trump, nor anyone else with some level of expressed affiliation to Christendom or Judaica, can be pinpointed as a source of. God has this weird way of wanting the glory to Himself.

"This is why the Left is scared sh--less by Cruz."

Yep. They can keep trying to pull their "gotchas", but every time they do, they step into his trap.

I presumed it was obvious that I meant “the best politician currently in the public eye”. The very thought of claiming to be better than God is silly and untenable.

If idiots keep on bragging that it is “his” (or “their”) trap then the God who insists on being glorified above all might cease to let it be “his” trap.

Some level of reverence might be called for here, just might. Just a suggestion, IMHO, HTRN.

The very idea of not concentrating on God (by means of concentrating on lesser things) is also silly and untenable.

Agreed. He leaves them walking away, wondering what just happened to them.

Hillary better be very afraid of the debates.

Read this comment on Truth Revolt:

I notice nobody is curious about Dear's religion even though he wears a beard that's trimmed in accordance with islamic custom.

“the shooting began behind a bank approximately one quarter mile from the abortion mill.”

That’s what I have learned, just recently. The shootings were merely in the proximity to a PP mill, this according to some eyewitness accounts. Also learned the weapon was a shotgun, and not an AK-47. This is getting weird.

Nicely done by Cruz. Always fun to watch him deal with the media.

Right now with the secular left, there’s no rational talking to them. They are the white-hat good guys, and their enemies the black-hat villains, or monsters. So they will only use moderate statements, like Huckabee made, apparently thinking he is responding to reasonable people, against pro-lifers, and they need to be called on their motivations all the time, as Ted Cruz did.

These “lesser things” are still a part of God’s plan, and He is very concerned about how we deal with these “lesser things”. A significant amount of Scripture focuses on how important it is to Him that we govern ourselves properly, even though to us this life will seem insignificant in comparison to His next plan.

But if you take your eyes pointedly off of God, then you will end up in vanity.

And this kind of pointed taking of eyes off is very marked here.

I really want to know what the two other guys (not the campus police officer) who were shot by Dear were doing and if they were in the PP office? I also want to know if there was any connection to Dear.

I also want to hear if the MAK that some are saying was his primary firearm, was legally sold to him after an FBI/ATF instant check?

The police are being very closed mouthed, which is appropriate. However PP leaders, the Big Zero (our President), prominent Democrats, and the media are saying that Dear is a right wing religious, zealot conducting a “war on women.” (Barf Alert) I would really like some facts and finding out if this guy is a leftist.

I have looked but no one has indicated his past voter registration (party affiliation) in South Carolina.

I usually refrain from playing pin the political affiliation on the criminal. However, an art dealer with a degree in public administration would make an unlikely Republican. His sexual behaviors, from trolling online sites looking for BDSM to arrest for being a “peeping Tom” don’t support his being religious. He’s a mixed up bag of contradiction because he’s mentally ill, that’s about the only solid conclusion that can be reached, imho.

I am so tired of beingg blamed for the CO shooting simply because I’m pro-life. Somehow my beliefs are responsible for this, obviously mentally ill, man killing three people. My understanding is that he didn’t shoot or kill anyone in the Planned Parenthood Clinic. YET, I am personally responsible for the three people who died at his hand.

I still stand against Planned Parenthood.
