Lawrence Technological University radio ad
self | 3 December 2015 | equaviator

Starting at least three years ago, I have heard on the radio station WJR AM 760 Detroit, a recruitment ad for the Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI which lists the various types of people they are looking for to enroll in their school. Among these most desired types are "the risk-takers" and "the anarchists"...

This ad is usually run during the early morning drive but I have not heard it on any other station or at any other time.

The fact that they announce that they are actively seeking "anarchists" is somewhat bothersome but since I first heard this ad, I've also heard a different version or two that don't mention anarchists specifically.

So, what I'd like to know is whether anyone else out there has heard this recruitment ad for LTU. WJR is, in the words of Rush Limbaugh, "the EIB's 50,000 watt blowtorch affiliate in Detroit...", and so the range radius of this station is significantly greater than the average AM radio station.

That said, I am curious to know just how many other WJR listeners have heard this ad for LTU and what they're thoughts about it are.

TOPICS: Culture/Society; US: Michigan; Unclassified
KEYWORDS: anarchy
Link to 4 different LTU radio ads: http://www.ltu.edu/ltu/radio_ads.asp

Unfortunately, I'm unable to preview these audio files to see if the ad I'm referring to is among these few.

If they don't really mean to say that they're looking for anarchists then what the hell are they talking about?

Do they offer “clock-making” and “pipe-threading” classes?

How about “how to plan an escape” class? Syed Farooq could’ve used that particular one.

I suspect the ad was written by an idiot with a poor command of the English language. They are probably trying to say they are looking for creative types.

The first ad you link to, the General Radio Ad, begins....

“We want you. We want the Brainiacs and the Einsteins. We want the Thinkers and Tinkerers, the Anarchists, the Rebels and the Visionaries.”

I can’t stream any of them until later this evening. The list shown at the LTU site says they’re from 2013 at the earliest. I first heard the one in question back in early 2012.

Yeah, that’s the one. I heard it again this morning between 6 and 6:30 am. I just don’t like the sound of it and I’m surprised that WJR is still running it.

In Silicon Valley they are all for creative destruction. Joseph Schumpeter said it first.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a radio ad for a University. I wonder if this is yet another sign that higher education in this country is in serious trouble. Or, maybe, I just don’t listen to very much radio ;-)

I found an article (PDF) online where Princeton U refers to Schumpeter as being a “Prophet of Innovation”.

1977 “Larry Tech” graduate here (BS Mathematics) Before it was a University it was the largest private college in the state.

Back then a good commuter school for engineering/science. Many graduates recruited by the Big 3 Automakers. Also had a top notch Architecture School.

My take is that they are trying to be cool/hip/cutting edge in their advertising.

“they are trying to be cool/hip/cutting edge in their advertising.”

That kind of rhetoric is more or less an abuse of the power of suggestion and for them to want kids to associate anarchy with being “cool” and “hip”, it seems to be somewhat unprofessional.

BTW, I’m not saying that what’s quoted as your having said is the rhetoric I’m referring to.

Few people outside of Michigan have ever heard of it, but yes, a very good engineering/tech school in it’s day.

I’m say that you and I know what it means, but the author is an idiot who probably chose poor word and didn’t bother to look it up.

You’re too kind. I think they know exactly what they’re doing.

David Bowie’s “Panic in Detroit” is about Anarchist John Sinclair who was heavily involved in stirring the Detroit pot in the late 60s.

He looked a lot like Che Guevara, drove a diesel van
Kept his gun in quiet seclusion, such a humble man
The only survivor of the National People’s Gang
Panic in Detroit, I asked for an autograph
He wanted to stay home, I wish someone would phone
Panic in Detroit

I wonder if this is yet another sign that higher education in this country is in serious trouble.

Not LTU, they're strictly a no nonsense engineering and technical university.......Several friends of mine have gotten their engineering degrees there and another one his masters in engineering.

In fact, over the past 50 + years the auto industry here in Michigan employed tons of LTU graduates. They don't deal with that other liberal crap.......
